Chapter 140: Prince Gregory: Being Summoned

I walked into my father's private office that was located in a secluded room in the back of the library. This room was his preferred place to meet when he wanted to discuss sensitive topics that he couldn't risk anyone overhearing. I knew before I ever arrived that this was about the upcoming royal council meeting, and Piper, in particular.

When I entered to find only my mother and father present, I knew this wasn't going to be good. My stomach knotted, but I kept my face expressionless. I closed the door and crossed the office to sit at the table with my parents.

"You summoned me," I said.

"Watch your tone, son. I am still your king," my father said, his tone sharp and scolding.

I bit my tongue to stop from saying something that could be misconstrued as disrespect. Or worse, treason against the crown. In the past, I wouldn't have thought my father capable of such behavior, but lately, I wasn't so sure.
