Lost Spell

Ares again tried to prepare himself but already he knew that this was likely a fight he could not win. The figures approached in a line with about two meters between them, it seemed they planned to attack at once.

Ares had already used the push spell to his limit and he knew that there wasn't much more he could do, the void spell wouldn't help either. Resigning himself to the loss Ares decided to go out all guns blazing. He stood facing the approaching figures and started circulating the void spell into his gauntlets. He knew it wasn't effective but perhaps if he was saved he would get points for effort.

Like a mad man he roared before running at the group of four. Whilst they were made of the same substance the figures had different characteristics and the axe figure seemed to be far more rash then the others. Breaking its formation the axe figure ran forward and cut down at Ares. While he knew he could avoid it Ares was aware that if he dodged this blow, he would expose himself to the other figures. He slashed out with one hand at the axe as it came down.

As his hand made contact with the axe there was a sucking sound as void the spell enveloped the axe and it promptly disappeared.

What the hell happened? Ares asked himself. Void clearly hadn't worked earlier but now it was working? Thinking through the reasons he realised; the weapons may not have been classed as the figure themselves. Void couldn't attack living objects but what of their weapons? This breakthrough resounded in his mind. Perhaps Void was far more powerful then he thought. If he could encase himself in the spell wouldn't he be invincible to all weapons? This realisation unfortunately did not come at the best time and upon hesitating Ares felt a tightening around his neck as the axe figure began to choke him. It only took a couple of seconds before the three weaponed figures caught up and Ares soon saw a descending sword aimed at his head. Ares shut his eyes momentarily before his doom.

The second before the sword made contact a splashing sound resounded. Opening his eyes Ares saw that the figures had all melted back into the liquid they had come from.

A figure appeared in front of Ares. He inhaled sharply as it took form. Warlock Solis stood facing him.

"You fought three of the echoes that is a worthy effort, it is of course nothing of accomplishment. I do wish to understand something though. What was the spell you cast at the end?"

"Its the Void spell from the Space book Warlock, I was given the spell book by Mars I thought we were all expected to learn it." It was true Ares hadn't seen anyone else using the spell in the compound but he assumed that was due to its limited use.

"You actually learnt a lost spell! The void spell is one of the basic level space spells!"

"Show me!" The warlock seemed very excited and almost shouted his words. He advanced on Ares and grabbed him by his shoulders as he spoke.

"Sorry Warlock but why do you wish to learn the spell, your magic is countless times more powerful and it truly does not have much use, lost spell or not." Ares felt an explanation was needed so that Solis didn't get his hopes up.

"Don't you understand boy, magic is like a tall building. I can reach the top levels but without the foundation beneath my magic will always be limited. With this spell everyone in the entire guild would be able to cast stronger more stable magic, it might even elevate our guild out of the depression we are in. This spell is invaluable."

Having not properly understood what it meant Ares was astounded, how had he managed to rediscover the magic? He assumed it was a natural progression after reading a half-broken spell circle but now the Warlock was telling him it was something astounding. Ares was initially surprised but he quickly realised what he had was something very much in demand, it seemed like just the spell itself was worth a great deal and further discoveries could be worth as much.

"I understand now what you wish to tell me warlock, but I cannot hand over the spell freely. To gain my understanding of its workings I suffered greatly." Ares inwardly scolded himself, he knew that the spell took him only days to understand but giving it away for nothing would not benefit him in the slightest.

"What do you desire." Warlock Solis asked his voice steady; it was clear he understood that he would have to offer something in return for the spell.

"I do not wish for much, free access to the restricted section of the library. Two non-attributed spells of my choosing and one hundred purple coins. Oh and of course I wish to be selected for this mission." Ares listed all of his demands quickly.

Didn't wish for much! Warlock Solis was deeply regretting voicing his compliments of the spell and letting Ares know what he had was so valuable. Still he couldn't extract the spell and this cost was still well within his bounds.
