Evan can imagine getting that call was really hard for Jasmine. She lost her husband to a bullet. Hearing her son was shot must have stirred up a lot of emotion.

“I’m not yelling. Something’s going on here, and we deserve to know why our son is in a hospital bed and what this human has to do with it,” Damon growls, looking at Evan, giving him an evil look.

“Don’t growl at him. This isn’t his fault,” Rene snarls.

“You’re defending a human? What’s going on?” Damon asks.

“I’m gay,” Rene blurts out, and Evan almost swallows his tongue. He hadn’t expect Rene to admit to his sexuality, even though he hasn’t been hiding it during his visit.

“And what exactly does that have to do with defending a human?” Damon asks, looking almost comically confused.

“What do you think my being gay has to do with me defending a man? Being protective of a man. I’m in a relationship with Evan,” Rene says, and he looks like he’s bracing, like Evan, for the shit to hit the fan.
