Chapter Sixty-five

Vanessa

I arrived at Richard's apartment at 7 p.m., feeling both celebratory and apprehensive. I wanted to share the good news with him, but I dreaded telling him the bad news that I was stuck in a fake public relationship with Jared Foster for the next few months. Richard is the jealous type, and as Liam pointed out, he wouldn't take it well.

If only he'd picked up his phone. That afternoon, I tried calling him several times. Had he answered, I would have taken it as a sign from the universe and not signed the contract. But he didn't, and now here I was, about to face him with part of the truth.

Twenty minutes later, the doorbell rang. It was the Thai food delivery I had ordered earlier. I went outside to collect and pay for it, making sure everything was intact before closing the door.

A few minutes after that, Richard came home, looking exhausted, like someone who had just been put through the wringer.
