Upon a Certain Death

What would you do if you knew that you were bound to die by the time you turn to a certain age? For Adelaine Reese, she'd much prefer to be someone who'd only die as she reaches a certain age than suffer her whole life with an absolute trash of a family. And as if fate has heard her, she woke up in a world wherein she thought she is now in a body that could never die, until she read a certain book. Her death was inevitable. From the day she learned how to walk and knew her own name, she figured it out. She's bound to die in eighteen years because of the disease – no, the curse – that was placed upon her. It wasn’t the type to slowly make her suffer or weaken her as time passes, but a poison that will immediately kill her once the clock strikes twelve for her eighteenth birthday. A horrible curse that she could never undo or remove, for it resided in her body on the day that she came out from her mother’s womb. It’s a curse that was set to be the only thing to kill her, because nothing or no one else could. Now as Zeshia Kylio Edregburn, the daughter of a witch and the descendant of a demon, she faces a certain death while doing whatever the hell she wants. * - - - - - * "Why are you avoiding me?" His amber eyes shone like gold as tears started to form. If it was any bystander who saw this expression in his face, they would feel pity and cry together with him. But not me. "Didn't I make it clear from the start? I hate you and I avoid things that I hate. It was you who wanted to stick to me." Sharps words escaped from my mouth, paired with a glare directed to this trash. I loathe this man. It was supposed to be the last job that I'll take before I die, and it was the right one for me. I've always wanted revenge for men who deceive women with their sweet words, only to leave them with the responsibility to take care of a child. And this bastard exactly did that. Now he tries to take my pity again, as he fell down from his high status, since the child he left was now successful in her clothing store. Allia, a precious child that continued to persevere and had the talent. I'd never let this bastard come near you. "What should I do for you to forgive me?" He was crying his eyes out, his shoulders shaking from weeping too hard. Like hell I care. An idea crossed my mind and a smirk made its way to my face. "You said you'd do anything, right?" He looked at me with wide eyes and fervently nodded. I walked towards his position and pushed him, causing him to fall to the ground. Using my left foot, I stepped on his chest and looked down on him, like a tyrant empress looking at an ant. He tried to struggle away from me, but I stepped on his chest harder. I raised my left brow and leaned towards his face, making sure that he'll see my smile. "Then strip naked and run on the plaza while screaming that you're a bastard and a trash who left his child for years and beg for her help when fate took everything from you." Although it was not really fate who took everything from him. I was the one who made sure to have him left with nothing. * - - - - - * NOTE: This story contains vulgar language and explicit descriptions of abuse and harassment that may not be appropriate for some readers.

Escape

I have to escape!

Even without looking back, I could already feel the immense blood lust from the angel descendant and another one, which was probably from Mister Leal.

Using the wind, I made air blades to break the glass window and rushed out to jump from the terrace. "Air, keep me afloat and let's speed up." I commanded and whirling winds surrounded me, keeping me afloat and I went to fly away to the forest that surrounded the house.

I didn't know that there was a vast forest around the house, but it would be a good place to hide as they chased me.

However, before I could even reach a kilometer away from the terrace, I felt an arrow grazing my left arm and in that split second, I felt my mana being sealed which also meant losing control from the winds.

"What the fuck?" I can't help but curse as I started falling from the air. When I glanced back from where the arrow came from, I saw Mister Leal holding a silver bow adorned with emeralds and aiming another arrow at me and even from afar, I could see how his eyes glistened silver with a hint of green.

Shit, how can he be from that bloodline?

The bloodline of elves, which were known for their intelligence and abundance in mana. One special clan in the elves were known to have strong innate mana in their blood that could easily overwhelm another nonhuman being's mana, thus acting as a seal.

Which means that arrow that grazed me must have his blood on it.

I didn't have time to think on what to do next when I heard a pair of wings flapping above me and without looking, I instinctively shifted to my demon form and used my fans to block the upcoming sword that was about to slash me.

Since my mana was sealed, I couldn't get the wind to blow him away like before, so I ended up being thrown by the force straight down the ground. It just happened in a flash and before I could even take a breath, I saw a glimmer from the tip of a sharp sword, so I rolled over to avoid it.

Or so I thought, but he was able to stab my left shoulder, making me scream with the sudden pain.

I hate this!

With all the strength I could muster, I let the demon blood in me take over and with that, I was able to temporarily overcome the blood of the elf that was sealing my mana away. Everything turned red and I could feel an inhuman strength coursing through my whole body. Using my right hand, I slashed my fan towards his direction and with that, he backed away.

I stood up, even with the blood dripping away from my wounds, and I felt the urge to kill the angel descendant in front of me. I let the desire to kill take over as I slashed my fans, ignoring every pain in my body, and barraged him with air blades.

Die

Die.

Die!

A maniacal laugh escaped my lips when I saw how he could not counter every attack and had wounds from my attack.

Serves you right!

I lunged towards his direction and was about to slash his neck with my fan when I felt something fast approaching me again. I immediately flipped my body mid-air to avoid it and instead of slashing his neck with my fan, I used the momentum to step on the angel descendant's face and used it as a foothold to jump towards the direction of the arrow.

Another wave of blood lust came when I saw the man with silver-green eyes fiercely looking at me, with an arrow ready to shoot. I can't help but smirk and immediately prepared my fans to block any arrow coming from him.

I won't let it happen the second time!

Upon releasing the arrow, I immediately slashed my left fan towards the arrow's direction to blow it away then prepared the other to slash him with air blades. However, before I could even put my right fan down to slash him, I heard a voice in my head.

[Don't kill the kids, please.]

As if slapping me back to reality, I immediately changed the fan's trajectory to down the ground as I felt my bloodlust calming down and at the same time, my mana was almost sealed again.

That was close.

Mister Leal seemed confused about what happened to me, but I summoned every mana I had left to teleport me a few kilometers away from here.

Thus, here I am now, running for my life to escape.

My mana was still sealed because of the elf's blood and though I can undo it, it needed time to completely unseal my mana.

As I ran, I could feel that around a tenth of my mana was unsealed, but since I haven't fully recovered my mana from the past job, this was probably all that I had left.

I kept my wits with me and focused on escaping. I can't risk using my mana to teleport, because that angel descendant would surely find me.

If I were to be honest, adrenaline is the only thing that kept me going until now.

But they can't capture me, at any costs.

Thus, using the remaining mana I have and the blood that continued to ooze out from my wound, I stopped on my tracks and concentrated.

I can't command any element anymore, so I have to make do with my blood.

I let my blood drip on a thorny vine on the ground that pricked me again, then pointed my palm towards it. I concentrated my mana towards it and in a few seconds, the thorny vine became black, huge, and most importantly, had sharp thorns.

I bit my lower lip when I saw how the trees quickly turned black too and had thorns all over it.

"I'm sorry." I silently muttered and went past the vine to continue on running. Even without looking back, I already knew that most of the trees behind me had turned black.

It was a curse.

I never wanted to use curses, but I had no choice.

It's called the "Curse of Thorns" which would require using plants as a medium to start. Like a highly infective virus, once it starts to manifest on a plant, it would easily spread to other plants. It would be filled with poisonous thorns that could easily kill a man with just a scratch.

The plants with this curse are aggressive and would attack people once they felt a blood lust of the people. They also get aggressive once they do not get to eat anything in a day, and unfortunately for the angel descendant, newly cursed plants are hungrier than anything and would attack any being with a living heart.

The only way to stop that is through divine power, which only angels or angel descendants have.

Now, they won't be chasing after me because that angel descendant would need to dispel that curse.

Though that would not be easy, since I was the one who started it.

I, a half-demon and half-witch, whose veins run the powerful beings' bloods, will not be defeated easily.

"Well, good luck now." I whispered under my breath and continued to run through the vast forest. Even from afar, I could hear the panic in the people's voices but I didn't have time to think about them.

I continued to move forward and even if I passed through the nearest village, I knew I couldn't afford to stay there.

They would immediately find me if I stay there.

I continued running until I stumbled upon a big tree that was probably more than a decade ago. It felt big and comforting, and when I looked up, I saw a hole on the top trunk which wasn't that noticeable since it was covered with leaves.

Without hesitation, I climbed up the tree and smiled when I saw a perfect resting place for a short while.

I didn't notice that the sun was already rising nor that I had already transformed back to my normal form, but I didn't have time to care or think about that as the exhaustion had already caught up to me.

I let the fatigue swallow me up as I slept with a small smile on my face.

Escape success.
