Underworld Intern

This is basically a tale of Hades and Persephone, but not quite like you know it. The love that blossomed between Hades and Persephone was never a mere coincidence like Greek mythology suggests, there are ancient truths that were buried, lies that were praised, and connections that were severed, never again to see the light of day… Until now. Persephone, a sheltered, home schooled sweet little girl finally gets the chance to see the world beyond her mother’s reach and enrolls in the most prestigious university in all the three realms. Will she fulfill her mother’s wishes of working hard and graduating collage so she can take over the business? Or will her encounter with the king of the underworld completely throw her off track? ***** “Lord Hades! Lord Hades!” “How many times have I told you not to scream in my office Thanatos?” Thanatos stopped in front of the large black table and slipped a piece of paper across to the dark haired man who was smoking a cigar at the other end of it. “You need to see this.” Hades picked up the paper and trailed his deep crimson eyes over each line, his brows knitting more and more as he read. “Is this a some kind of fluke?” “I followed it up sir,” Thanatos responded. His voice indicated both excitement and nervousness, how could he not be? This had never happened before in the history of the underworld. “It’s not a fluke sir, someone actually applied to intern in the underworld.” “Persephone….” Hades mumbled to himself as she gazed at the picture attached to the application letter. “What are you up to little dove?”

Chapter 4 : Hope you carried your heels.

A knock at the door pulled the king of the underworld from his musing. He sighed heavily before telling whoever it was who had come to ruin his already terrible day even more, to come in.

"Good afternoon boss," Thanatos muttered sheepishly as he made his way to Hades' desk and placed the coffee and bagel he had given him to hold earlier that morning. "I'm assuming the meeting with the fates didn't go very well."

"I don't want to talk about it," Hades responded. He picked up the cup of coffee and sipped it incessantly.

"Hasn't that coffee gone cold?"

"You mean like my cold dead heart?"

Thanatos rolled his eyes and sighed before pulling out a chair and sitting down. "I don't mean to be nosy boss, but you shouldn't stress yourself so much about finding a girlfriend."

"I'm not looking for a girlfriend Thanatos I'm looking for a wife! A partner.. someone who will help me run this gods forsaken place!" Hades threw his head back in dejection. "Don't get me wrong I love my work here, but sometimes it gets a little… lonely."

"But sir, I see you going on multiple dates all the time, why can't you pick any one of those many beautiful ladies to marry you?"

Hades had actually considered doing just that at some point, but he couldn't. Most of the women he mingled with didn't particularly like him as a person, they liked his status and what he could give them.

When the Great War against the Titans ended, the three sons of Kronos; Zeus, Poseidon and Hades, divided the realms among themselves and ruled all, both mortals and gods. Poseidon ruled the seas and all water bodies, Zeus named himself the ruler of the sky and the chief deity of the pantheon, while Hades was stuck ruling the underworld.

In as much as Hades had the money, the lavish lifestyle, the expensive cars and all the material things drachma could buy, no woman wanted to be permanently bound to a man who spent all his days in a realm where even the rays of the sun refused to reach. That was the reason his first love had left him, she didn't like the dark and gloomy underworld so she left Hades for someone else, someone out there on Olympus where summers were long and sunny days never ceased.

Hades' first heartbreak all those millennia ago was what made him the man he was now. The cold hearted playboy who changed women like he changed his limited edition wrist watches. But secretly, he longed to have someone rule by his side, seeing his brothers marry and have children of their own ached Hades' cold heart, he too wanted to feel the warm love of a wife, and maybe a child or two. But because of who he was, the dark king of the underworld, he may never get the chance.

The crimson eyed man looked down at his watch and rose from his chair, "I have to dash to the gym Thanatos." He grabbed his keys and started walking towards the exit, "you can have the bagel. And if you tell anyone about what we've spoke about, I'll feed you to Cerberus."

Thanatos grimaced at Hades' words, "geez, and you wonder why you can't find a wife." The silver haired man grabbed the bagel and took a bite, "stale…"

Persephone opened the door and looked up at the man who was smiling down at her.

"Good afternoon ma'am, I have a delivery here for you, two mattresses from the one stop shop."

"Oh it's you," Persephone responded, "Tekos right?"

"You remembered.." Tekos scratched his chin sheepishly as a faint blush crept onto his cheeks. He was sure that Persephone wouldn't even know who she was, I mean look at her, she probably met hundreds of guys each day attempting to spark a conversation with her.

The blue eyed girl opened the door for the satyr and gestured him to come in. Eris who was listen to music spotted the handsome satyr and immediately walked to his side. "Hi there Mr satyr sir.."

"Hi, it's Tekos by the way." The man placed the mattresses on the floor and then handed Eris a receipt.

"You carried them all by yourself??"

"Well they're mattresses, they're not very-"

Eris wrapped an arm around the man's bicep making him jolt his head back in surprise. "You've got a really nice arm, do you work out?"

"Umm sometimes yes.."

"I like men who take care of themselves," Eris mumbled with a smile that made the man very uncomfortable. "We should all hang out sometime what do you think? The weekend is coming and we need someone to show us around." Eris peeked at her roommate who was already setting up her bed. "Isn't that right Persie?"

Tekos' eyes lit up, this was his chance to get to know the blue eyed beauty a little more. True, he would have preferred to take Persephone on a date with just the two of them, but he'd have to settle for what was already on the table.

"Well if you ladies don't mind, there's going to be a big party on Atlantis tomorrow evening."

"On Atlantis?! Shut up!"

"A party?" Persephone didn't like the sound of that. Her mother had made her swear she wouldn't take alcohol, smoke or hang out with any boys. And this party sounded like all three of these things combined.

"Apparently Poseidon is throwing a birthday party for his wife, and anybody who can make it there is invited," Tekos explained. "Atlantis is a pretty hard place to reach considering it's under the ocean, but guess who is best friends with a sea nymph?"

"And you're saying we can come with?" Eris was over the moon, she needed to celebrate the start of her collage life, and what better way to do it than attending a party hosted by one of the richest gods in all the three realms?!

"Of course you can tag along, if you're up for it?"

"Definitely!"

"Great, then I'll pick you guys up at seven tomorrow," Tekos spoke as he exited the room, "dress nice alright."

When Tekos left, Persephone turned to her roommate and gave her a wary look. "Eris I can't go to this party."

"Of course you can," Eris encouraged, "it will be fun, and we'll get to meet a lot of important people. This experience is good for us as collage students."

"I don't think my mom would approve."

Eris groaned and threw a pillow at Persephone. "Forget your mom, she's not here."

"I'm not allowed to drink, smoke or hang out with boys.."

Eris walked to her roommate and held her shoulders firmly, "I promise i won't let you taste a single drop of alcohol, I won't let you have access to any cigarettes or bongs, and I most definitely won't let any guy touch you. Now will you go to this party with me? Please?"

"I don't know…"

"Come on Persie, classes start on Monday, we need to live a little before the cruel hand of education grabs us and tortures us for the next six months."

Persephone pondered on the offer for a while, well as long as Eris would keep her promise of keeping alcohol, cigarettes and boys away from her, she wasn't technically going against her mother's wishes right?

"Alright I'll go with you," Persephone responded making Eris jump in joy.

"Now all we have to do is pick out our outfits for tomorrow," Eris exclaimed excitedly as she dug through her wardrobe. "I hope you brought your heels Persie, cause knowing the three brothers, this will be a super fancy party."

Eris turned to her roommate who was shifting uncomfortably in place. "You own a pair of high heels don't you?"

Persephone chuckled nervously and shook her head.

"Great Gaia Persie, what am I going to do with you?"
