Ugly to Untouchable

My name's Earnest. I won't sugar coat it, I'm butt ugly. I'm the subject of bullying and harrassment in every way, shape, and form. Anyway, in a blind suicide attempt, this barrier of mine came out of nowhere and saved my life? You have to be kidding me, but maybe it's not so bad. It's extremely useful; this could be a chance for me to get even with the world.

Attack on Mansion

Honestly, I've been in need of a shower for more than just cleaning. It's also pretty therapeutic.

The water pressure and heating are the embodiment of perfection.

Each droplet feels like the touch of an angel, but I've been in here long enough.

I turned the shower nozzle, cutting off the water, then stepping out of the shower.

I looked in the mirror as I dried myself off. I look like an entirely different person, yet I'm still the Earnest that I've always been.

After putting my clothes on and handling all of the more miniscule hygiene practices, I thought I should maybe explore this place.

I only know a few routes to get around, and I'd hate to get lost. I through on a jet black parka and exited the room.

I made few reference points using the many dramatic art pieces William had around his manor.

I've been walking for about 20 minutes now. I wonder how anyone could comfortably live in a place this big.

Of to the side of me, I heard a sudden yet faint shriek.

I turned in the direction of the noise. It was Carissa.

As much as I hated her, she was still a sight for sore eyes. Ironic how that works out. Looks really can get a person far, but now I have good looks as well.

I waved a hand at my housemate and continued walking.

"WHO ARE YOU?!" Carissa yellee from behind.

The sudden loundness caught me off guard. I turned around to address her.

"Uh, Allen? Or-um, Earnest..." Is what I said.

"N-no way...Earnest was no where near that attractive," Carissa stated.

Well thanks, but screw you.

"Nope it's me...us," I added.

"This must be one of your vampire abilities, you monster," Carissa muttered before pulling out a crucifix.

She threw the crucifix at me followed by an a handful of diced garlic.

"What the fuck?!" I yelled while swatting the debris away with my barrier.

"You won't take my family foul demon!"

Then Carissa ran off. Tch, no way in hell am I running after her. Now the hallway's litered in garlic bits, that's gonna leave a smell.

This crucifix looks expensive. Gold plated and diamond incrested, what a waste...

I wandered the hallway for about 5 minutes when it suddenly become quiet and dark.

When I say dark, I mean pitch black darkness.

I also couldn't move, like my barrier had restricted my movements.

A voice appeared in my head an a flash of white light appeared in my vision.

"Sensory Calibration: 70% Complete"

Then everything returned to normal, like nothing had happened.

What was that? Progressively weirder things have been happening to me ever since this metal spider thing embedded itself in my back. Good and bad.

I need to get to the bottom of this. I'm almost done exploring this place.

I wandered the hallway for a little while longer.

Unexpectantly, I heard the sound of glass breaking followed by a struggle.

I adjusted gravity in my barrier, then propelled myself using external force to head to the area faster.

Several body guards were either lying down dead or unconscious on the floor; no assailant in sight. Did they have a fight that ended in a party-wide K.O.? No, that's dumb. There was a broken vase on the ground, poor flowers.

I checked all of their pulses to which I found everyone was still alive.

I tried shaking a few awake, no luck. I should call the police. I searched for my phone...shit. I left it in my room.

On second thought, what could the police do anyway? I don't even know what's happening, so it would only make for an awkward phone call.

I looked around for clues. After about a minute of investigation, I noticed that a hole had been cut in one of the sky-lights.

Crap, someone must've broken in. If they think they can ruin my perfect little life, they thought wrong.

I'm hunting you down. I flew through the hallways while refracting light, effectively making myself invisible.

More guards taken out. Whoever did this is obviously incredibly skilled.

I bet I know what they're after too, William; he's a famous politician afterall.

I wouldn't be surprised if he had a hit out on him.

Luckily for William, he's my work partner so I can't really let any harm come to him.

The intruder probably went to William's main office.

I noticed that various gadgets were strewn all over the place. One of them in particular looked like an electric net. I pushed a little button on the net and it compressed itself into a tiny capsule.

Cool, but dangerous; I'll keep this on me just in case.

I flew up the stairs to William's main office and grab the door handle.

There was a gentle buzzing sensantion on the handle. I know this feeling, it's electricity.

That's a pretty good precaution to keep people out of your room, unfortunately for the intruder, that won't work on me.

I gently opened the door, not making a sound. I'm so glad they keep their hinges well maintained.

I closed the door behind me gently.

I looked ahead to see a man dressed in all black with his back to me. He was padded in slick armor. It's almost like he's some sort of espionage super soldier.

He had Carissa in one arm with a gun to her head. In front of them was William, looking panicked at his desk.

The man spoke in a deep, yet methodical tone. "Give me all of the files regarding your financial transactions. Make it quick, my employer said I wouldn't have to kill you if you complied."

"Alright, whatever you say, just don't hurt my daughter," William pleaded.

Poor William, can't catch a break with the coercion.

I silenced my steps and walked beside the mercenary.

I pinched the tip of his gun, bending the barrel until it was closed.

The mercenary dropped the gun and Carissa, then jumped a good distance away.

"Come on out monster, I know you are there," he stated calmly in my general direction.

He knows about me, since how long ago?

A returned my barrier back to normal, revealing myself.

"Who sent you? How long have you been watching us?" I asked.

"As if I'd tell, I've got a job to do, guess I'll have to kill you to do it though. I had hoped we wouldn't run into each other."

"Y-you..." William exclaimed.

"You really need to invest in better security William," I told him.

The mercenary pulled some strange blades out of a utility compartment on his tactical suit and hurled them at me with a deadly accuracy.

I made a motion with my hand and deflected the blades. If I let the blades hit my barrier normally, the reflection property of it might kill him, and I need answers.

"Tch, I should've known that wouldn't work." the mercenary sneered.

He pulled some strange knife out of another compartment and charged me with it.

The knife felt strange, it looked like it was rapidly vibrating. The man slash at me, for a moment it almost ripped through my barrier, but the barrier expanded, blasting the mercenary back.

He smashed into the wall rather harshly, but it seems like his tactical suit absorbed most of the damage.

Rubber insulation? Nano-mesh? What is that? That was at least a 45 kph collision. Oh whatever, it doesn't matter.

The mercenary charged at me again, he used more of a hit and run tactic this time around.

I'm not sure how I didn't notice it before, but it seems like he's moving at super-human speeds. Wait, is he getting faster?!

I need to put an end to this quickly or it might end badly. I made a grab for him, but my arm only phased through an afterimage.

Whatever that knife is, it has the capabilty to pierce my barrier to an extent, and this guy's definitely not a normal human.

If anyone could harm me, it would be him. So his existence is rather troublesome.

I guess I'll have to out-speed him. I lowered gravity, frictional coeffiecients, and silenced my steps. I followed up by turning invisible.

I dashed around the mercenary in a continuous, yet upredictable pattern.

He seemed to be alert, but now panicked.

I dashed past him, striking him in his left leg. He fell to one knee in response.

I grabbed him by the hair, and rammed him into a wall, then used him as a battering ram to break through the doors of the room. I tossed him down the stairs, flying above him, increased the gravitational constant then collided with his chest.

Surprisingly, he was still conscious. Bloody, yet conscious.

He gripped his hands around my foot trying to lift it off his chest, however I made it several hundred pounds.

He slashed at my leg to no avail. I took the liberty to kick him in the face a few times until he dropped his knife out of pure exhaustion.

I unmasked him. His face looked rather normal aside from the glowing red eye he had.

The glow of the eye got brighter until a laser shot out, bouncing off my barrier. I jumped off the man, weary of anymore tricks he might have.

At this opportunity, he got up and attempted to run away in a trail of red lightning.

It felt like time slowed to a crawl in that moment. I could see the mercenary making the motion of running, but he wasn't even moving. Well, this gives me an opportunity of my own.

I pulled the electric net device out, pressed the button, and hurled it at the mercenary with inhuman force.

It ensnared him, and he collapsed to the ground, convulsing in pain. Eventually he stopped moving and the net ceased shocking him.

"What the hell was that?" I asked myself.

I dashed all over the manor, checking for anymore security risk. It seems like some of the maids live here as well, many of the rooms are occupied by their sleeping bodies.

William's wife let this slide? Pft. I guess their relationship dynamic is none of my business.

I put the net back in my pocket, picked up the mercenary, and dashed back to the main office only to find it empty.

I may have also looted him for everything he had. What? Don't judge me, I bet most of this stuff isn't even on the market.

I looked around for a while and found William and Carissa huddled together under his desk.

I leaned over and looked at William. "It's over, mind explaining what that was?"

I brandished the mercenary by the collar.

I took the opportunity to toss the crucifix in my pocket back to Carissa.

Her eyes widened.

"You must be past the 9th generation vampires, that explains why you didn't burn!"

So she was trying to kill me...wtf?

William spoke up. "I-I have a lot of enemies, I couldn't tell you who sent that mercenary without thorough investigation."

I rolled my eyes. "Gee, what a surprise."

"Thank you Earnest," William said as he crawled out of his hiding place.

"It's boss and don't thank me, I'm more or less doing this for myself," I stated.

"That doesn't changed the fact that you saved my life boss," William said.

"Yeah, yeah. Not to address the elephant in the room, but, what are we going to do with this guy?" I asked pointing at the slumped over dude I was holding.
