We were one lesson period away from school dismissal. Mrs. Smith was no where to be found, maybe she took a sick leave, I didn't know but what I knew was that she wasn't going to teach us Agricultural science today.
"Everyone look! it's drizzling" Stacy Jones, our class president said pointing outside. Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked outside. Tony moved his chair closer to me and whispered "it'll start raining heavily in five seconds". I turned to look at him " how sure are you?" I asked him but he only smiled and exactly five seconds later, just like he said, it started raining heavily. I looked at him in disbelief.
"I know, I'm amazing"
"it's just a coincidence" I replied. He shrugged his shoulder and stood up.
"Where are you going?" I asked him.
"What do you think? I'm going to play in the rain like everyone else " he replied. It was then I realized that it was only the two of us that were in the classroom. "or if you want I can stay here with you?".
"You wish! " I said and took a random book from my bag.
"Suit yourself " he shrugged and walked out of the class. I let out a loud sigh. I wasn't quite sure of what I was sighing about. I stood up and walked to the balcony. I watched every one dance around letting the rain wash away their sadness. Tony stretched out his hand indicating that I should join him in the rain. I looked at him, he was soaking wet but he was smiling.
"I rather watch" I said to him. He put his hand in his pocket and stood beside me.
"You're different" I turned to him "I like it" he said before I could say anything.
"I thought you saw me as a weirdo?" I asked him.
"I did, not anymore"
"But you..."
"The rain is stopping" he cut me short "too bad you didn't get to play in it".
"I didn't want to get wet"
"What's wrong with getting wet?"
"I don't want to enter my dad's car soaked in rain"
"I still think you..."
"Evans!" Mrs. Irene called. "I have something to tell you ". I walked up to her.
"Your father said that he won't be able to take you home and that you should find your way home today " she said. I just kept on looking at her. " find my way? ". I thought to myself.
"Did you understand what I just said?".
"Yes ma'am but did he give you any reason why he can't come?" I asked her.
"No, see you tomorrow Evans" she said and left. I just stood there. find my way? I haven't walked home before, did my dad's car break down? is his boss making him work extra hours?. I had lots of questions, I felt abandoned.
"What's the problem? you look worried" Tony asked. Was he at my back the whole time?
"it's none of your business" I said and walked to the classroom to pack my books in my bag.
"You're leaving now? your dad's not here yet"
"He can't make it today so I'll have to walk home" I replied him.
"Do you want me to walk you home?". I stopped what I was doing and looked at him, he had this sincere look on his face.
"No, thank you " I said to him. He seemed disappointed.
"Well you can't stop me" he said and carried his bag "lead the way ". I couldn't stop him, I didn't want to, as much as I hated to admit it, I didn't want to walk home alone. Just like he said he followed me it was scary and relieving at the same time. I stopped at a crossroad.
"Why are we stopping?" he asked me.
"I don't know where to follow anymore"
"So, we're lost?"
"No, I just don't think I know the way anymore" I replied.
"I don't see any difference". I stopped and examined everywhere. After six minutes I decided on a way to go.
"let's take this way" I said pointing at the left side of the road.
"Are you sure that it's the right way?". I hesitated and said "yes".
"You hesitated!"
"What? do you regret following me?"
"No, of course not"
"Then shut up and follow me!" I said and started following the left, Tony walked closely beside me. We kept on walking for like ten minutes then I saw my street sign.
"You can go now, I've reached my street". He shook his head and said "I said that I'll walk you home not walk you to your street". I didn't know when I started smiling. "Oh my goodness, I made Laila Evans smile, I feel like I won a gold medal right now!". I ignored him and started walking. "Wait for me!" he said but I only smiled and kept on walking. He ran to where I was and held my hand.
"What are you doing?" I stopped walking and asked him.
"Your hand is warm" he said ignoring my question. I didn't say anything and kept on walking because I knew he wasn't going to let go of my hand. After a while I stopped.
"That's my house" I said pointing at the bungalow in front of us. I didn't see my dad's car so I guessed that he wasn't home yet.
"it's beautiful, just like you". He said, finally letting go of my hand. I smiled , he turned to me and said "Why are you smiling? I was talking about myself". I scoffed and walked to my door.
"See you tomorrow!". I waved back at him and entered inside. I smiled, I was happy, I hate to say it but Tony made me happy today.
