Chapter 50

It was a couple that Robert and I had known fairly well for a number of years. I’d more or less lost touch with them in the last year or two, as I had with so many other people. They were clearly delighted to see me ‘finally out and about’ and, more to the point, ‘with someone’. I introduced them to Philip, and they promised to call us soon and set up a dinner date.

On the way back home, we were content and quiet.

I broke the silence, saying, “I’d sort of like to go to church in the morning. You’re more than welcome to come along, but I’ll certainly understand if you don’t want to.” I already knew that his family had been Catholic originally but for the last century or more had been Episcopal.

“I’d like that. Where were you planning to go?”

“Well, my membership has always been at St. Philip’s Cathedral, but they’re so low church these days that I really don’t like going there. For the last few years, I’ve mostly gone to St. Martin in the Fields.”
