To Convince The Devil

This was originally the first thing I wrote on this site but stopped because I wasn't happy with how the story progressed. I have come back a year and a bit later to revise chapters and rework the story in a way I am happy with and in a way I'm hoping you enjoy as well.

You care?

Within the span of only a few minutes of silence, and with the occasional drag of gravel beneath Raphael's feet, the Devil herself finally spoke up. "Can you not sulk into an existential crisis please, it's heartbreaking to see someone become hollow and complacent." Her voice rang Raphael awake, "Sorry what? Did the devil just say that my newfound sorrow about being punished wrongly, broke her cold, dead heart?" He replied as he stopped dead in his tracks. "I'm sorry that you may not believe it but like I said before, that's not how these things work here." She turned to face the now annoyed Raphael. "Yes, it's heartbreaking, the man in the sky isn't the only one that watches you, I also have a view of the world. To see good people become rotten, and to see people commit a terrible act breaks my heart."

Suddenly her voice grew passionate, her body loosened and was no longer the business woman structure that it was mere moments ago. "He doesn't care about you all, he just wants to control what he can't, but I care about everyone, especially people like you Raphael. I've loved watching you since you were young because you were always such a nice boy, you always tried to cheer people up, you were respectful and loving. Your goofy awkward way of talking and caring way of listening was so appealing." She started to fidget, her hands dancing over each other, her eyes gazing into space. "I was stressed all the time! I was so desperate to be kind and cared for, so willing to take care of everyone else before me. I've wanted to die since I was 8." Raphael said as his eyes welled up, they became glassy as tears painted his cheeks. His body shaking aggressively, his arms growing heavy, his hands so cold.

"I know," She said as she peered at him. "I was so desperately wanting you to be a good person, I was so desperate to see you become loved and see you become successful, I was blind to the internal. I myself sinned in my own way, I didn't see you suffer. I watched you like a hawk and ended up "watching" in the same way the big white beard does. I've witnessed it with person and person and every time it feels horrible. " She began to stand still and peer through Raphael. "It's people like you that are why I'm cracked." Shocked by the comment he looked towards her, she seemed almost like she was in pain. "Even the devil can suffer? Even she has to be punished for what she does, or worse yet, what she doesn't do."

"Every time I cried, every time I was so scared of my own thoughts, every time I was at the end of my thread, you weren't looking? You only watched my pretty little mask as I was being kind and loving." Said Raphael, He started to sit in the road, holding his head in his hands, wetting them with his tears as he tried to wipe them away. He knew that both of them were disappointed. Even if he was the only one crying, he could tell that she was hurt. "I'm so sorry I didn't watch, I'm so sorry I didn't try to help you, I know why you did it, and it's my fault." The devil exclaimed as she placed her hands on her head, rubbing her temples. A moment went by, both of them paused in regret or care. The two of them at this moment were the same, The devil seemed human to a degree but through blind tears Raphael wasn't seeing that.
