Akilah

Akilah was in the library. She was always in the library. This was where she (and her books) were happy. She was reading one of her poem books when she got cat called. Again. It was no surprise to Akilah - what with her long mouse fur hair and her dazzling blue eyes that would make the purest sapphire jealous. Still, she turned the page and read on. Five or so minutes later she heard the familiar clomping up the stairs to the library, followed by the chime of teenage boys laughing. 'Keep your head down.' Akilah instructed herself hoping to avoid the scan of them. Jocks. Always trying to bully or ask her out.

"Well, well, well!" came the all to familiar jeer of Jamal - the school's heartbreaker. Collects girls like trophies. There was no point in running, she was cornered. "Why, are you alone? Where are your friends? Oh right! Animals aren't allowed in the library, yet here you are!" Jamal joked. The other boys who had fanned out behind him laughed. It was like a bad Disney rip-off.

"Cut it out loser, it's not funny!" A boy with black hair and glasses called out. Akilah glanced a thank you to the boy, before turning to her main goal.

"Jamal. To what do I owe this great displeasure?" Akilah retorted, pushing her pigtail behind her ears, with more confidence than she felt.

"A date. Today." Jamal laughed. Around two years ago Jamal and his buddies made a bet. Whoever breaks Akilah's fragile heart would win one thousand dollars. (Fifty from everyone in basketball club, you do the math) clearly Jamal was still optimistic. Heaven knows why, Akilah made it clear that dating was not a priority. Grades however were. Jamal thought highly of himself as he was the "hottest guy like ever" in his words. This is because he has enough muscle to overcome one of the grade threes (Jamal and Akilah in grade twelve ) forest green eyes that peer into the soul of his new "target". That is what all the jocks call their crush/challenge. Akilah snapped back to reality.

"The twenty-first of May." she said collecting her books. As she picked up her diary Jamal put his hand on hers (his being comically bigger) and pushed it down. Akilah's thoughts were a blur of

anger and confusion, yet she couldn't make one of those thoughts out. Jamal used his free hand to look deep into her eyes but Akilah was taking none of it. Jamal made the mistake of leaning in and closing his eyes only to be brutally awakened by Akilah's hand. She sent him flying to the side before storming out.

Jack

Jack had been at this school for one semester and was already popular, on the basketball team and in the jock squad. The girl back there was so rude. How could she reject one of the jocks? The school's heartbreak at that! When asking Jamal about it, the rest of the gang explained the bet. "I could do it!" Jack piped up. The rest of the group turned to him. "Ok look, pigtails knows you have a bet. She won't accept a date. She doesn't even know I exist. I'll do it." There was a murmur among the group before ultimately agreeing. "So it's settled! I'll win the bet and give you guys twenty bucks each." (There were around seven or eight boys) Jack agreed.

"Are you sure you can handle her? She's quite a tough nut to crack." Jamal questioned looking Jack up and down.

"Please, her? Give me three weeks and a rose!" Jack responded. He swiftly grabbed a lily off the school's bushes and then he ran out the back to greet his first target.
