Better Safe Than Sorry

Upon entering the town square I grow more cautious and uneasy. Its relieving to be out of the woods but entering a new town is always unnerving in a way.

People live, or lived, in towns but this one is abandoned so I'm betting on no chance of talking my way out of a problem.

With only my machete on my side, I draw it from its sheath and proceed into the town square.

Looking up, the clock tower looks taller than it did from far away. It still isn't anything compared to the Sears tower but it's still pretty tall for a small country town.

Looking from left to right I see no trace of zombies. Just weathered sandy porches and fences overgrown with vines.

Not a single car in the town square.

The grass in most places is waist high and most of the doors to the shops are open. In fact all of them except for the church which is chained and padlocked shut...

It looks like the handles are very worn indicating whatever's in there was trying to get out.

Still not a sound. Not even a single bird chirping. Honestly it's a pretty good sign so far. The church is one red flag but as long as I'm quiet nothing would come of it for now.

A sign above one of the town center buildings across from the church reads "Sheriff" so I head in that direction.

Hopefully there are still some good supplies that haven't already been looted. I could really use a med kit or a GUN.

(Can't believe I lost my .45 in that last scuffle with the undead. Damn near lost my life because of my own stupidity.)

As I step onto the porch, the boards gently creak under my feet. "These buildings themselves must be pretty old." I mutter to myself under my breath.

The door is half way open and the front window has 3 perfect holes in it surrounded by spiderweb fractures, most likely from rocks.

I walk to the front window and take a peak inside but I don't see anything out of ordinary, but there's a closed metal door with just a small window eye view.

Looks like the lobby is clear. Good enough to go inside.

The door opens with a loud CREAK and I tense up instantaneously but proceed inside. Its what I have my machete for anyways.

Usually I can handle 1 or 2 zombies by myself, so I'm not worried about this situation in an abandoned back country town.

I try to peek in through the metal door but can see nothing but black. Doesn't look like there are any windows in the back. Makes sense considering it's Lewisburg's version of jail.

After looking around I managed to find a set of keys, a flashlight, and the 3 rocks. Nothing else of use at the moment but I'll probably want to come back when I have my backpack.

haha How convenient. Problem being, there are no lockers in the room I'm in. They must be behind that metal door. Is it worth it? I don't even have my escape rout planned out yet.

I'm just scoping out after all so I don't need to be hasty.

Screw it I can just come back but the keys can fit in my pocket and this flashlight might come in handy.

Time to check everything else out.

The next building in line is a coffee shop. Supplies maybe? I can definitely check places like that out later. I'd more than likely need my bag anyways.

Next one down on the corner is a pharmacy. Medicine is good. All the while peering through windows waiting for something to jump out.

After making my way around to the church, It's apparent to me that for the most part, it is completely safe.

I just have to figure out why the church is chained up. Every entrance is chained. Even the cellar door going under the church is locked but from the inside?

Maybe somebody is down there.

I'd better find my own squatters den before trying anything serious.

"What if they shoot me on sight? what if they arent alive, but zombies?" I think to myself.

Too much of a risk to take right now. I'll come back later.

Better safe than sorry.

I think I'll grab my bag. Everything seems clear so far so it can't hurt bringing it in. I need to find where I'm going to hunker down so I think I'll check the houses next.

Before I go I might as well test out the front door. It's braced shut. What's the harm in it?

I walk around to the front of the church and gave the big oak doors a good 3 knocks. Loud enough to hear them echo from inside.
