Zen growled. “Sit.”
“I have to…Grace and Laura.”
“No, you’re to stay safe.”
Carlo watched him for a moment. “Babe, I like you a lot, I really do, but I’m going.”
Zen’s tail reached for him, curled around his wrist, while he pushed some more buttons with his hands. “It’s dangerous. You need to stay safe.”
“Zen.” He took his tail, unwound if from his wrist, and gave it a light caress. “I love that you’re looking out for me, but they’re my friends. I haveto go.”
“No.”
Carlo didn’t answer, he headed for the door. When Zen called his name, he sprinted toward the gunfire. The first person he met was Grace, who was flat against the wall.
“Gracie.”
“The women are in the canteen, or I think it’s a canteen.” More gunfire sounded.
“Good. Go to Zen in the cockpit.”
“Why?”
“He’s worried.” He didn’t care why. He wanted Grace away from the gunfire.
She looked into his eyes. “Do you think we’ll make it?”
