Chapter 15

When Avery returned to the house, all she could hear was an endless series of "I love you Angel'' coming from the plush toy that her son was constantly pressing. He was exceptionally happy in one moment and in the next, he ran over to her and looked at her with adorable eyes, holding the chibi toy up to her. Knowing her son, she knew what he was implying. He was missing his papa—already!—and was asking if he could see him again.

"Well done, Damon D'aboville." She muttered under her breath. The bloke had managed to get her son attached to him within one short visit.

She received a call from the estate's gate before she could give her son an answer.

"Is anything the matter?" She asked. She didn't often have messages from the gate.

"There's a Mrs. Vaillant here to see you. She insists that she is your mother and that you will definitely want to see her." Reported a man's voice, who must be the guard.

She rubbed her temples. Great. Just when she thought she could finally have dinner and enjoy the rest of her evening peacefully. There was only one way to deal with Amelia. "Let her in." She instructed.

Of course, allowing for her mother to be let in didn't mean she was going to let the woman into her house. She kissed her son's forehead and ruffled his hair. "Mommy will be back soon."

She then went out to meet Amelia who had just rushed in after being allowed entrance. She looked frustrated, probably because she never had to deal with such humiliation. Smiling at her predicament, Avery crossed her arms. "What do you want, Mrs. Vaillant?"

Amelia huffed and got down from her car. "I'm your mother. How can you be so distant?"

Avery's lips twitched at the corners. "Mother? I don't remember having one."

As though she had forgotten something, she exaggeratedly exclaimed. "Oh, forgive my memory lapse. I tend to forget the unimportant things. But I seem to have ended our relationship long ago."

Amelia frowned. Did her daughter just include her among the things that she did not consider important? As she inwardly complained, she probably forgot that years ago, their roles had been reversed. She had not disowned Avery but it wasn't any different. She had made her daughter feel neglected all her life, yet she had the guts to correct her. "Just a few days ago."

"Yes." Avery looked like she had just remembered. "That means you have no business claiming to be my mother."

Amelia was irritated. Were they seriously going to dive into that? She frowned in anger. "You can erase names and change your surname but do you know what you can't delete? DNA."

Instead of making her feel guilty, her words seemed to give Avery an idea. "If I drain all my blood away and get new blood, are you certain that we will still be related? I will change my bone marrow as well. The next time Chris drops by, I will ask him if that can permanently alter my DNA or if there is a different way to do it. Thank you for the idea, Mrs. Vaillant. Unfortunately, I do not have anything to give you to repay your kindness."

It would have been better if she didn't add the last part. Amelia had never felt more humiliated than she felt right now.

"Do you hate me so much?" She couldn't help asking.

"What do you want?" Avery asked for the last time. From her tone, she would kick Amelia out if the latter did not state what she wanted.

"I only brought toys for my grandson. I would have loved to see him but you probably wouldn't allow me to." She sighed, trying to sound pitiful so Avery would let her in. Unfortunately, her daughter was no longer the weak little thing who would pity a venomous snake if she saw it crying.

She smiled gently. "It's great that you understand that. It saves me a lot of time that I would have used to explain the obvious."

Amelia took a deep breath to keep herself sane and brought out a bag of toys from her car. "Here."

Avery didn't reach for the bag. "I forgot to mention, my son has everything he needs. He doesn't need your charity donation." Not to mention, his father had brought him what looked like a lifetime supply of toys—not that it mattered.

"I didn't mean it that way. It's just normal for…"

"My son has no such grandmother." Avery interrupted her before she could bring out a fake 'good grandma' act. "Get your pretentious generosity out of here, Mrs. Vaillant."

"You…"

"Or I will call the police." She threatened, and Amelia had no choice but to drive away.

She called the estate gate as soon as Amelia drove off.

"Ma'am?" The guard waited for her instructions.

"There is a black car heading towards you, belonging to the woman you just let in. She is not allowed here. Make sure to inform your colleagues too. She is an impostor. If she ever claims to be my mother again, call the police." She heartlessly instructed.

"Yes ma'am. Do you have any other instructions?"

"Don't ever let anyone with the surname Vaillant in." She added.

"I understand, Ma'am."

Early chapter again. Yay!

Do you think Avery is being too heartless by calling her mother an impostor, or does the witch deserve it?
