Practice Time: Part 1

Well, this is awkward. I finally get some friends and the second we have a sleepover we get superpowers. Not to mention whatever happened to us when they first came in. I don't know if we would have died but something could have happened. I'm just happy that I stopped it. And now we have powers. And as it turns out having control over them does not mean being experienced. For the past few minutes, we've been trying to use our powers. I've been having the most difficulty out of all of us. Well with one power at least. I haven't really been able to do anything with my magic. I've tried to use it and my hands would be covered in deep blue energy mixed with yellow. They don't combine to make green though. Words that I could barely understand would run through my head and it would be too much for me. I would stop and the magic would fade away. I had decent results with my other powers. There are so many though so I had to figure out how to use every single one of them. Do I plan on being skilled with them? No. But should I know how to use them? Yes.

"Okay, doing this at the same time isn't helpful, we should take turns," Johnny suggested. Seems like a good idea. It'll give us the time and concentration to use our powers.

"I think we should pair off to save time. It can help us deal better too." Ellie said. That was actually a better idea. We all voiced our agreement with the idea and paired off. Johnny and I went together, Miles and Amy, and Ray and Ellie. Johnny and I stayed in my bedroom because we felt it worked. Ellie and Ray went into the living room for space. Amy and Miles went into one of the spare bedrooms. One of the ones we have for the twins for when they visit.

"Okay, so do you wanna go first, or should I?" I asked him.

"You can go first. My headache is going away so I'll be good in a few minutes." I decided to save magic for last and hope for a different result. First up was hydrokenisis, the ability to control water. We're both cross-legged on the floor and there's a cup of water between us. Johnny stared at me intently with a hand against his head. I concentrated on the cup and the liquid inside. I stuck two fingers out and slowly raised them. The water followed my fingers and lifted into the air in a stream.

"Holy shit! It's working!" I shouted in excitement. I swirled my fingers around and made loops in mid-air. When I moved my fingers forward it went farther away from me. After a little fooling around (AKA splashing Johnny) I put the water back in the cup.

"Woah, you're a natural at that. How'd you know how to control it?" He asked with curiosity in his eyes. I looked down at my hands and flexed my fingers.

"I think it has to do with the fact that I gave us control. It's like my body knows how to do it and my mind just has to connect with it." A blink. And another. A deep breath and I felt cold air exit my mouth. The room felt colder around me. I raised an open hand and there was frost coming off of it. A blast of what I'm assuming is ice shoots forward and freezes the water in seconds. "I AM AMAZING!" I shouted. This was amazing progress. I just froze a cup of water solid.

"Okay, instead of moving the water, try moving the cup with your telekinesis." I raised my hand again and focused my attention on the glass rather than the water. A raise of my hand and this time my magic surrounded it. A ring of magic surrounded the cup and it slowly lifted in the air. I got too excited though and the cup started to tip. My other hand shot out and the water that spilled stopped midair.

"You are really good at this. Mind if I give it a go?" The cup was firmly placed back on the ground with all the water back in the cup. I relinquished my hold on the cup that has been the product of our experimentation. Johnny removed his hand from his head and stretched it outward. There was nothing coming from him but the cup lifted anyway. There was no energy signature like mine. He navigated the cup through the air like a pilot that had been flying for years. He moved it with such elegance it was like he's been practicing forever.

"Consider me impressed. You are a natural telekinetic Johnny." He chuckled as the cup flew around. I took the water out of it so he could move it around more easily. Both the water and vessel were floating through the room. Dancing around with moves neither of us knew but both of us moved to.

Johnny put the cup down and I tried to follow suit. Instead, I missed the cup and the water soaked into my carpet.

"Fuck, how am I gonna get this out of the carpet," I whined. Having a wet carpet is gonna cause problems that I don't wanna deal with.

"Jay, you imbecile, you can pull the water out of the carpet with your powers." He pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration. A sheepish smile spread across my face.

"Okay, listen, I just got these powers, I'm trying my best." With the wave of a hand the water was back in the glass. "Let's try our weird psychic powers now." I got up and set the cup on my dresser. We moved closer together when I sat back down. "You first."

He nodded and closed his eyes. I know that he's a telepath so I needed to make sure I was thinking something. I had to consciously keep it playing in my mind.

"Are you… are you thinking of Party in the USA in repeat?" I blushed from embarrassment.

"It just started happening and I didn't know how to stop it. Nor did I want to."

"Okay, but it worked! I heard your thoughts. And I turned it off. It's like a switch in my brain that I can flip. And focusing on one person is actually easier than I thought."

"Okay, my turn now. I'm gonna be a human mood ring." I closed my eyes and tried to focus on Johnny. I could feel him. There was excitement and pride. But I could sense there was more underneath but I couldn't get to it. I would need more practice. God, I feel like a video game character with generic text. I also tried to look for the metaphorical switch Johnny was talking about. My mind felt more vast while I tried to do it. But, I did find it. It's like there's a breaker box in my brain. I can turn off the part of it that lets me perceive other people's emotions.

"I did it too. I could feel what you're feeling. The excitement and happiness and the little bit of nervousness there. Also, we are inside so maybe we should save the flying and stuff for another day."

"Yeah, maybe we should've told that to Myles and his electrical burns."

"…We should go check on them right?"

"Yeah let's go." We scrambled off the floor and went to the other bedroom. We didn't know which one it was though so we had to randomly pick. I swear if anything is on fire I'm fighting someone.
