12 | Almost Heart Attacks

It felt a lot like a date. They were at a table for two — having opted for one — and were seated opposite each other (Maggie would have said something about how she'll have to scale the table to kiss her but Lena shoved that thought way deep down into a tiny box, she had to keep her feelings in check).

But Kara just had to be an amazing ball of sunshine. Ever since the puppy-eyed blonde had not-so-gracefully barrelled into her life (the Kryptonian was surprisingly clumsy) with her warm hugs and atrocious amounts of food, the CEO couldn't help but develop a little crush on the reporter. Kara had stuck with her through thick and thin, slowly taking down each and every brick Lena had ever built with such care and love.

How could she not like Kara Zor-El Danvers?

She was the strongest — literally and metaphorically — kindest, funniest, most optimistic, and most compassionate person Lena had ever met.

So yeah, she had a tiny crush.

Lena cut the steak effortlessly and neatly (the Luthors ate a lot of steak — she's had practice so she's an expert now, unfortunately, it couldn't be put on her CV under the skills section) and took a forkful of it in her mouth, enjoying the flavours of the dish.

Kara — on the other hand — was wolfing down her large roast chicken as if she hadn't eaten for days and Lena couldn't help but smile at the sight. It was almost like watching a toddler feed themself.

"Kara, you're going to end up wiping out the restaurant's reserves if you don't slow down!" Lena commented playfully and took a sip of the red wine, chuckling at the pout she received from the blonde.

"I'm hungry."

"You ate on the way here," Lena pointed out with a slight smirk. "Three hot dogs if I recall correctly."

"Yeah, well..." Kara leaned over slightly and then not-so-subtly whispering, "that's an alien appetite for you." She sat back down and gave Lena her signature sunshine smile and the CEO felt her stomach do cartwheels — when on earth did it learn to do gymnastics?

Their seats provided them a gorgeous view next to the window which looked out below onto all of National City's night glory. This made a perfect place for a family meal.

Or a date.

Lena brushed her thoughts away and decided to ask Kara how her life's going in order to distract herself.

"How's being Catco's Ace Reporter going?" Lena placed her cutlery down to give Kara her full attention.

Kara shrugged and swallowed her food. "Oh y'know, the usual. Snapper being a bit of an ass, all that jazz," she said nonchalantly.

Lena feigned offence at Kara's bold comment. "My my, Kara Danvers!"

Kara just shrugged again and sipped on her own glass of wine. "What?"

Lena continued to fake an offended voice. "Kara Danvers doesn't say anything unless it's a sixties swear word!"

Kara laughed at Lena's shocked expression. "Well today he's an ass," she concluded. "He made me rewrite the same article fifteen times." The blonde thought for a bit before crying out in protest. "And I only said 'golly' that one time Lena!"

Lena raised an eyebrow and a smirk crept its way onto her face. "You said it yesterday when you walked into the door in my office. Honestly, I'm surprised it didn't fall off its hinges."

"That was the door's fault!"

Lena chuckled as Kara's cheeks flushed red like a tomato. Yesterday, Kara had walked smack-bang into her door and a small part of Lena liked to believe that it was because of what she was wearing. She had an important business meeting so she was wearing a fancy suit to scare the stuffy old white men and Lena swore she saw the reporter's eyes widen before colliding with the door. The two had laughed heartily about it afterwards with Lena hastily brushing away the fact that she loved to make the other woman flustered. (She wore it on purpose but of course, Lena would never admit that to her).

"How the hell do you put up with him?" Lena asked as she finished the last of her dish.

"Smile, nod, smile, nod," Kara replied and demonstrated by exaggerating her facial expressions to show Lena who laughed in return. "Then he'll leave me alone for a while."

They were interrupted by the waiter who had brought yet another roast chicken, eyes widening as the realisation that it was the third one tonight set in.

"That waiter looks concerned," Lena commented as he left the table muttering an 'enjoy your meal' for the third time to Kara.

"That good ol' alien metabolism!" Kara said way too loudly (no wonder so many people knew). "I get to eat junk food and never touch a vegetable ever and I'd still be in shape." Kara then raised her arm and flexed her toned bicep, Lena's throat totally didn't go dry at that. She had almost choked on the expensive wine she was sipping. Her heart decided to go into something which felt like cardiac arrest because her pulse was through the roof.

It also didn't help since Kara was wearing a sleeveless blue dress which matched the colour of her pretty blue eyes. Lena always had to force herself not to get lost in them.

She cleared her throat and calmed down a bit, an easy smile sliding onto her face. "I'm going to make you eat kale one of these days," Lena said with a challenging smirk.

Kara's face wrinkled in disgust. "Nope, nope, nope. Never."

Lena noticed some sauce on the corner of Kara's mouth (because she obviously wasn't staring at her lips). "Kara, you have a bit of sauce right there." Without thinking, she scaled the table (Maggie would be proud) and leaned over to wipe the sauce off with her thumb.

Kara looked at the wide-eyed and a blush bloomed on her cheeks as Lena sat down, chewing the inside of her cheek and worrying about how badly she had fucked up.

"Um... t-thanks," Kara stuttered and pushed her glasses up her nose in her usual adorable fashion.

"No problem," Lena managed to say calmly and smiled at her which was the complete opposite of how she felt inside.

The two managed to ease into conversation again and spent the rest of the evening talking about the most random things, enjoying each other's company.

"Can we get dessert?" Kara piped up with a childlike excitement in her eyes.

Lena couldn't not smile at that. "Of course," Lena replied and Kara flashed an even brighter smile than before (if that was even possible).

"Can't finish a date with no dessert!" she chirped and called their waiter over to order.

Lena's heart swelled at the statement and felt that she might actually go into cardiac arrest this time. Lena realised she hadn't been paying attention at the the waiter due to... other things (gymnastic classes her stomach seemed to have gone to).

"What did you order?"

"Chocolate pecan pie, duh," she answered as she stared dreamily at out of the window and Lena swore the blonde was going to start drooling soon. "Only the best dessert in the galaxy. And hey, if it's being sold in a restaurant this fancy, then it has to be good."

Lena's heart warmed at how much Kara loved her food and let out a laugh, "Of course."

"And I'll have you know I've been to many parts of the galaxy," Kara said with a grin on her face.

Lena's heart leapt.

Again.

, Lena realised and as if on purpose her heart sped up again.
