Chapter 13 - Nightmares

Then there were his nightmares.

At first, he was reluctant to even mention those. The hospital threw the rest of us out in the evening, and the next morning I would notice the dark bags under his eyes or the stress around his jaw or, occasionally, the bite marks on his injured fist. I am certain Nirvesh and Vijay noticed as well.

It wasn't a difficult conclusion – especially when we invariably found him in a worse state in the morning from what we had left him in the previous evening.

I spoke to Dr Hooper about it. She frowned, then called upon the night nurses.

All of them swore he never made a noise during the night.

"But did any of you actually go in and see?" I asked.

"We go in when it is time for his medication," one nurse said. "He is always awake by then."

We had our answer.

"Would you mind staying overnight?" Dr Hooper asked me. "You are his fiancée, after all, I can get the paperwork done for you to stay."

"Of course."
