After class, the teacher asked Reed, "For the last time, where were you coming from?" Reed lied, "I was with my friend."
"Your friend!" the teacher repeated. "Everyone was in class today except you, and you claim to be with your friend?"
The teacher led Reed to the principal's office. Reed stood by the door, Mr. Daph sat in his chair, and the teacher occupied the visitor's chair.
"What's the issue?" Mr. Daph asked, abandoning his laptop.
"Hope all is well?" He glanced at Reed. "What brings you to my office, Mr. Kaida?"
The teacher explained, "He wasn't in class throughout my period. When asked where he was, he said he was with his friend."
Mr. Daph looked at Reed and smiled. "Is this true?"
Reed remained silent, his feet cold and his head bowed.
"Answer me, where were you?" the principal yelled.
"Sir, you're shouting," Reed said.
Mr. Daph ordered Reed to leave, saying he was disappointed and would report the issue to his mom.
Reed begged, "Please, sir, I'm very sorry. I promise it won't happen again."
Mr. Daph paused, smiled warmly, and said, "You're going on a month-long suspension."
Reed, never suspended before, knew it meant 24/7 monitoring.
The teacher took Reed to the suspension class, an empty room filled with books.
"Go in!" Reed entered, feeling lost.
The teacher shut the door, leaving Reed alone.
Reed thought, "For the first time, I'm in a suspension class."
He picked a book and soon fell asleep.
Ms. Dera, in charge of the suspension class, woke Reed. "Who do we have here?"
Reed explained his situation.
Ms. Dera said, "You're in the right class, wrong chair. Welcome! I went to get your roommate."
Ethan walked in slowly, surprising Reed.
The two behaved like strangers to avoid suspicion.
Ms. Dera, the school librarian, was friendly but harsh with disobedient students.
Everyone took her for granted since she was often locked in the library.
