Chapter 16

“Had a little too much to drink?” he heard someone ask.

“Yeah. He’s young. He doesn’t know when to stop, even when I told him to,” Beau replied, sounding disgusted.

“Kids,” whoever had been talking said with a sharp laugh before he moved on.

Rick rested his head against the top of the car, the cool metal helping calm his roiling stomach.

“Deep breaths,” Beau said, so Rick complied. “Now, get in the car.”

Rick did, leaning his head back, his hands clenched in his lap. He felt more than saw Beau get into the driver’s seat.

“You doing better?” Beau asked.

“I’m not going to throw up again, if that’s what you mean,” Rick told him.

“Good. I don’t want to spend the next hour cleaning the interior.”

“Such compassion,” Rick grumbled.

“You’ll get that when we get back to the apartment,” Beau replied as he started the car and pulled onto the street.

Rick didn’t get compassion, per se. He did get to talk out what he was feeling.
