When he finally stabilized himself and tried to rush out again, he was met with an even stronger force and then he was sucked back in.
He was going through a similar situation when someone was sucked into a swirl. The more a person tried to break free, the more trapped they would become, like a fish stranded on the beach, never able to jump back into the ocean.
