Berserk Wolves

Chapter 21 – Berserk Wolves

"Where are we? What's going on?" Jhin quickly asked as he pretended to scan the surrounding.

This entire time, he was being carried by a wounded soldier, a middle-aged man with a huge scar on his left cheek.

Seeing that Jhin had woken up, the middle-aged man shook his head and replied, "I'm Rafael, we have returned to the mainland. At the outskirts of the shelter."

"Shelter?" Jhin muttered in confusion. Then he continued his act, "What happened? What about the Shrine? Where's Commander Crystal?"

Although he already knew what had happened, Jhin still decided to act innocent, or simply clueless. It was one of the most important skills he learned back then. 'Acting ignorant despite knowing lots of things.'

Through this skill, he was able to extract ideas and knowledge from his employees and business partners. Now, he is going to use the skill to gather information from the man carrying him.

Knowing that Jhin has some connection with his commander, Rafael pointed to the side. "She's there, severely wounded. As for the shrine, we suffered a devastating loss without obtaining a single thing."

Following the direction of his finger, Jhin saw a group of soldiers lying on the ground. Among them were the unconscious Crystal and Saline.

'Truly! Birds dies for food, so does the people of this world.' Jhin couldn't help but mentally sighed.

To feed their family, they are willing to risk their lives. "Now I'm more curious how they were raised."

Having a single person with such mentality is already rare, yet an entire army of such people were in front of him. To have the capability to groom such people, Jhin wondered how it was done.

While thinking as such, Jhin gazed landed on the black cat. At this moment, the black cat was lying on Crystal's chest, sleeping soundly.

"I hope it doesn't make trouble," Jhin prayed. Then he looked at the soldier blowing the horn. "What is he doing?"

"He's calling for reinforcement." Rafael replied with a solemn face. He stared at the direction of the portal and gripped his swords.

Seeing his actions, Jhin was confused. They had already exited the shrine, yet these people were still on their guard.

As though noticing Jhin's confusion, Rafael sighed. "Blackrock Shelter is located next to the Mysterious Forest. The portal we just exited is inside the Mysterious Forest."

"Mysterious Forest?" Jhin grew puzzled. Rafael's words didn't make sense. He said that they were inside the Mysterious Forest, yet he hadn't seen a single tree so far.

Clicking his tongue, Rafael said, "Mysterious Forest is the home to all magical beasts."

"But I couldn't see any trees ahead! Why is it called a forest?" Jhin blurted out.

"That's normal, during the night, fogs would cover the entire land. Thus, limiting the vision." Rafael explained. "If we survived tonight, you might be able to see the forest tomorrow."

Hearing him, Jhin grew more confused. Taking a deep breath, he said to Rafael, "Aren't you worrying too mu…"

"Awoo!"

But before Jhin could finish his words, a howl sounded from the distance. The instant the howl sounded; several howls followed.

With a wry smile, Rafael walked towards the other soldiers and said, "Brothers! Those who could still fight, stand up!"

Hearing his words, one soldier after another stood up.

"Brothers! It'll be a tough fight! I hope you all will take care of me!" Rafael continued as he put Jhin next to Crystal and other unconscious soldiers.

"Indeed!" A soldier walked towards Rafael and patted his soldiers. It was a young with a large bow on his hand. "Please take care of us Captain Rafael!"

Hearing those words, Rafael looked at the man. "It should be us relying on your arrows Captain Mon."

"Please take care of us captains!" The dozens of soldiers looked at the two captains. They unsheathed

their long swords and raised it into the sky, "For the SHELTER!"

"Let's go!" Rafael commanded and started moving towards the direction of the portal. Behind him followed the soldiers.

"Hays~ To think that I'll be caught in another mess." Muttering to himself, Jhin controlled one of his ink soldiers. He commanded it sneakily follow the soldiers.

The soldiers walked two hundred meters before stopping.

Through the ink soldier's vision, Jhin saw the soldiers vigilantly scanning their surroundings.

"Let's hold on for about an hour!" Captain Mon said while drawing his bow. Surprisingly, the moment he drew the bow, a translucent arrow materialized on the bow.

"Yes, Captain Mon!" The soldiers said in unison.

Watching from the distance, Jhin have the feeling that something big was about to happen.

"AWOOO!"

The howling grew louder and louder. Jhin felt a slight tremor from the ground.

Suddenly, the fogs in front of the soldiers started rustling, as though a large body was moving forward. Then, everything turned eerily quiet.

Cold sweat trickled down from the soldiers faces as they gripped their weapons.

Swish!

A transparent arrow flew into the air, it whizzed past a soldier's head then… Bam! A large shadow fell to the ground.

The fogs slowly cleared down, and a wolf the size of a grown cow could be seen twitching on the ground. On its forehead was a small wound with murky red blood oozing from it. Its beautiful red fur was stained with its blood while its blood red eyes vengefully stared at the soldiers.

"Damn! It's a pack of Berserk Wolf!" Captain Mon exclaimed in terror. His hands were moving fast, shooting one wind arrows after another. "Hurry! The Shell Formation!"

Hearing his command, the soldiers reacted. They surrounded captain Mon in a circular formation. As they moved, a transparent sphere started to materialize around them.

Swish! Swish!

One Berserk Wolf after another pounced towards the soldiers. However, the moment these berserk wolves got closer, the longswords of the soldiers would block their attacks. Even killing some on the spot.

The barrier from the formation enhanced the coordination ability of the soldiers. Allowing them to fight the wolves steadily.

No matter how ferocious the wolves attacked, they couldn't penetrate the defense of the soldiers. Unfortunately, under the onslaught, the wounds of the soldiers started opening, allowing blood to flow out from it.

When the berserk wolves smelled the blood, their eyes immediately turned bloodshot. Violent energy started gushing out from their bodies.

"This is bad! The Berserk Wolves are entering berserk! If this continues, we won't be able to hold on for ten minutes." Rafael said while brandishing his sword, cleaving the Berserk Wolf in front of him in two.

"Listen! I will leave the formation and kill those who hadn't entered berserk state yet!" Rafael grimly said as he dashed out of the formation.
