I closed my eyes and let out a shuddering breath. My fingers were numb and cold, my arm aching where the needle pierced the vein. Something clattered onto the pavement, and I looked down to see the needle. It had slipped out of my hand. Nothingness swirled around me, bringing the first sense of peace I'd felt in my short, miserable life. There was no one to miss me, and no one I would miss. There's always someone else to beat or rape. The regulars would move on quickly. I died. Only...wasn't death supposed to be dark? And since when did 'nothingness' have so many gods? My movement broke Luke and Jessia from their shock, and they quickly realized my intentions.
"Wait, Xiviyah, get back here!" Luke shouted, his voice laced with alarm.
He lunged towards me, hand outstretched, moving with supernatural speed. But his hesitation had cost him precious seconds, and I had just enough time to slip through the gate, closing my eyes as the golden swirls enveloped me.
I gasped as the gold shifted to black, the cold intensifying as I began the transition between realms. It seemed to drag on forever, the space between heartbeats stretching into an eternity. Strangely, my consciousness expanded, following the trails blazed by Haven's shadows. I could see half the city at once, all the death, blood, and destruction wrought by my hands.
