Chapter 42

Adair stepped onto a metal platform that had foot markers for her to align her feet with. Once she had done this, the door closed behind her. Since the foot markers were the same size as Adair's feet, she wondered how this machine would have worked if she was a bear-like Hank. Because there is no way that Hank could have fit into this machine.

Would the machine grow to fit someone the size of Hank? Or was there a different machine that tested larger beings? Whatever the answer, Adair did not have any more time to think about it, since a blue interface appeared on the glass in front of her. At first, Adair could not read the language that the text was written in, but the letters of the text repeatedly changed until the language that George had taught her showed up.

Somehow the machine knew that Adair could suddenly read this language, and it stopped on it, and it began filling out a form in front of her. While it was doing so, Adair began reading along to see what this form was asking of her, and the first thing that she noticed was the form seemed to just be asking about her basic information like name, gender, race, date of birth, which galaxy were you born into, family background, magic skills, body enhancement art is chosen, and a variety of other questions.

The problem that Adair had run into was that she did not know the answers to the majority of the questions and the ones that she potentially could answer, such as the family background. She did not know if she was even allowed to tell the machine that she was related to Anahel because while everything inside this house, including the people, all seemed to have a personal relationship with Anahel, she had no idea if this machine was connected to the galactic internet or some database where the public had access to.

If either of these options were true, then exposing that she was related to Anahel could have many unforeseen consequences that Adair did not want to think about. So out of all of the questions that this questionnaire asked, three of them and the rest she filled in that she didn't know since it did not allow her to leave the answers blank.

The machine accepted her form, and then a wall of text appeared in front of her, and it explained that the machine was going to fill up with a high-grade solvent which is going to test her potential and which body enhancement art would fit her the best. It also told her not to panic when the liquid went above her head because the liquid was not harmful and was breathable for almost all beings.

While it said almost all beings, Adair had worried that she was too different from all beings and that this liquid would actually drown her. Because of this, she had tried to escape out of the container, but her feet were stuck to the ground, and this is when Adair noticed that sometimes while she was reading the contract, her feet had become bound to the metal floor.

Adair looked worried and looked outside the tube to see what the green man's reaction to her struggle was. And he looked just as worried as Adair, and he had his hand on a red button that Adair assumed was to stop the machine. She started acting crazier and moving her arms in an exaggerated motion, hoping that the man would stop the machine, but a new message appeared in front of Adair. This time it read. "Please calm down Adair, if you do not will have to either stop the machine or apply a relaxing agent to you, so the test can continue."

Adair hoped that the machine would stop the test, but that did not appear to be what her instructor had in mind as he pressed something on the screen in front of him, and as soon as he did, Adair felt an acute pain in her upper arm, and when she looked over to why she felt pain in her arm she noticed that there was a glass needle retreating from her arm and this is when Adair realized that her teacher had chosen to give her the relaxant.

Just moments after, Adair realized that she started to feel calm and that there was nothing wrong with the world. Her eyes also lost focus, and she entered a blissful state, not caring about anything. A lime green liquid slowly surrounded her and eventually completely surrounded her. To Adair, nothing out of the ordinary appeared to be happening.

Minutes later, the green liquid exited the tank the same way it entered, and when the liquid had completely disappeared, another needle pierced Adair's arm, this time waking her up from her blissfulness.

As Adair came back into consciousness, she first wondered why she was in a tube, but eventually, everything came back to her and at first, she was pissed at her weapons instructor but eventually calmed down since nothing appeared to have happened to her and that the man was probably just doing his job, and she couldn't really fault him for that.

She also noticed that she was able to move her feet again, so she decided to put her hand on the glass in the same manner that her instructor had done in order to open the device, and this time it let her out.

While she was worried that this test would answer, some information that shouldn't be made public would be shown in this test, but the test was already done, and there was nothing that she could do about it, so she might as well check what the damage was.

As she walked out of the machine, she approached her instructor and realized that he was reading from a tablet. She also noticed that he had a questioning look on his face, which slightly worried her, but she didn't really care too much as long as the information that her mom was trying to hide was successfully hidden, even though she did not know what that information was.

She tried to duck under the man's arms, but her wings got caught on his arms, and Adair realized that once again, she had forgotten about her wings. The man, as if seeing that Adair wanted to see the results of the test, stepped back and lowered the screen to her height, so she could read it.

The letters quickly scrambled from a language that Adair could not read to the language that Hank and George had taught her. As she read the results of her test, though, it appeared that her mom or Anahel had successfully hidden her information because under every topic that it had ranging from age to race, to the bloodline, to even her gender, everything had the word "failed" next to it.

When she first read this, she wondered if she actually failed all of the tests but she quickly realized that her mom probably just made the information look like that so no suspicion would come up, and when it switched languages, it switched the answers the test had actually gotten with the word failed but with the quizzical expression on the man's face, she assumed that this was probably not the case.

The man then said, "this is a very unusual situation, and I will need to talk with Goddess Anahel on how I should proceed with me teaching you. You are also dismissed." And with that, he opened a door in the wall just like her previous teacher did and disappeared through it.

With how the man spoke about goddess Anahel meant one of two things to Adair. First was that he and Anahel are close and that he can go and ask her anything whenever. She leaned towards this option, but the second option was that her special access to Anahel through the books and crystal feathers were not as special as she was expecting and that everyone had access to her.

An interesting thought also just appeared in Adair's head as she was walking away from the training area. Why was she able to understand the words that her teachers were saying? While she did have extensive training in the language by both Hank and George, neither of them really went into how each of the words sounded.

While George did go over the pronunciation of words with her, she never actually heard anyone ever speak the language until she appeared here. While she assumed that Anahel, her first teacher, and her weapons instructor all spoke the same language, this notion was proven false by when she looked at the tablet, which had the results of the test it completely changed languages.

Does this mean that the house is automatically translating the words for me so that I can understand what everyone is saying? Also, if this is the case, then maybe I was being a bit too harsh on my first teacher, who gave me the flashcards.
