Chapter 39

“Kind of a rough day,” he said. “Want to walk while we drink these?”

I considered and nodded. We walked with our coffees, wending our way north and west, until we were in the ravine park that ends at St. Clair and Bathurst. It was a favorite walk of mine, and it was only when we emerged on St. Clair that I realized where we were.

“Is there some reason we came this way?” I said.

Zvika smiled sheepishly and then pointed. “I live just over there, at Vaughan Road. I thought I might show you my place.”

By this point the sky was just beginning to lighten towards dawn. I was pleasantly tired, and still fired by the traumatic energy of the funeral. I wasn’t bothered by Zvika’s suggestion.

“What about coming back?” he continued. “You can crash there.” He shrugged. “Keep each other company.”

This sounded so human, and so compassionate that I nodded, though I also laughed.

“What about my car?”

Zvika shrugged. “You can pick it up tomorrow. It’s on a side street.”
