Chapter 28

Our hearts felt like they were about to burst when the door suddenly swung open. " Why didn't anyone say anything to me!!!" exclaimed the crazed Tait. Laverna cried again, causing Tait to feel some regret for her madness. I told Tait what had happened, so she thanked God ninety-nine times for her weak spirit.

"Why don't we search for your resemblance to Petra to get rid of this similarity?" Tait suggest a great idea, but she exempted herself from it, claiming that his lack of interest in her was proof enough. And so, for two weeks, we imitated Petra in my palace. Laverna's maid watched us as we talked, ate, walked, and even slept. But she insisted that there was not even a trace of resemblance.

Perhaps her servant misunderstood something, so she advised her poor mistress, "My lady, I think you should give up." Then she glanced at me, and I felt that she included me in her words: "Even if you peeled Petra's skin and put your body in it, the Crown Prince wouldn't look at you." Laverna kept swearing to her servant that she did not do that to get his attention.

It seemed that I wasn't the only one who felt humiliated, as Tait spoke audibly to me, "Let us thank the Lord that my lady doesn't need anything to attract anyone." Then she continued, looking at Laverna's servant, "If I were to count the nights my lord slept here as each hair I have, I wouldn't have enough."

Tait's exaggeration was extreme, but I didn't want to correct it. Laverna felt angry; how could Tait not defend her too? But Tait frowned at Laverna, as she didn't have the right to speak about Laverna and the Crown Prince's relationship. Laverna understood that, but she strongly wanted someone to protect her back as well.
