Chapter 24: City of Ruin

Once he was out of his daze, Desmond retraced his steps from the direction he had followed Lydia. The further into this ruined version of his city he went into, though, the more devastation he encountered. Countless homes had been torn apart by some unknown force, even the sidewalk had been cracked and broken in places. The closer he got to the center of the city, the more he began to see what he could only assume to be the source of the destruction.

Dark, pulsing vines splintered up through cracks in pavement and out of windows to wrap around buildings and climb up to their rooftops. Some of the taller buildings even looked to have been pulled from their foundation to the ground or else ended up falling into the building beside it because of these dark vines. Desmond had never seen anything like it before in person and had only been reminded of them by the way the cursed mark wrapped and crept down his skin.
