The Echo

Every few decades, a new Keeper is chosen to protect the gateways between the spirit world and our world. On the day of his 21st birthday, Desmond wakes to find a strange, cursed mark in his arm, with no knowledge of where it had come from. Upon discovery of The Echo and realizing how real the existence of the spirit world is, he becomes determined to find a way back to his normal life. A task that should be simple enough, if it wasn’t for the mysterious stranger that initially saved his life. Chapter 11: The Dark Ones

“Time moves faster in The Echo, doesn’t it?” Desmond asked suddenly.

Atlas blinked in surprise to his question. “Uh, yes, I believe so. Why?”

“I’m going to set an alarm on my phone for sunset, so I know when to come back. I still have a roommate here that would freak out if I didn’t come home,” Desmond explained.

“Just be careful then. And I wouldn’t use your powers unless you need to. It seems that the curse does spread the more exposed you are.” Atlas said.

“Yeah, I figured that part out already,” Desmond said.

“No, I don’t think you understand,” Atlas put a hand on his shoulder to draw his complete attention, “once you are bound to The Echo and become its Keeper… your physical body in this world will die. You’ll not be able to come back.”

Desmond stared at him for a long moment before saying, “I get it. I’ll be careful.”
