I followed David's broad back through the dark passages and fought a torrent of conflicting emotions.
He was in his shirtsleeves, which was my favorite, and he held my hand tightly and tugged me forward, holding the candle in front of him so he was silhouetted against its warm light. It reminded me of the first times he'd taken me through the passages, and that always made me smile.
But I could feel the tension in him. The death-grip he had on my hand. And I'd seen it in his eyes when he came into the room after Mardie left me.
