Rain started to pour relentlessly outside, tapping against the windows of the school lobby. Yvonne stood there, her heart pounding as she stared out into the gray afternoon.
"We have alerted the police, and they will soon be here," Yvonne said, her voice quivering with worry.
"We can wait for the police," the receptionist replied, her tone calm.
Yvonne felt her world shattering around her. She blinks back tears, trying to process the nightmare unfolding before her. If someone could have told her she would experience this, she probably would not believe it.
Alexis, sensing her distress, reached out and squeezed Yvonne's hand.
"The police will soon be here," Alexis said, forcing a tight-lipped smile to reassure Yvonne.
"What about any of her classmates?" Yvonne turned to the receptionist, desperation creeping into her voice. "Surely, someone must have seen her."
"Most of them have gone home," the receptionist explained.
