The Archaic Dragon Mage

Wyatt was alone in the world. When the rifts opened the world was thrown into chaos. Archaic mages came through those rifts, and war after war followed. The last war had ended when Wyatt was just a baby, but he had still lost his eye to it. The empty socket, and loss of depth perception made him an easy target. Wyatt being an orphan meant that no one back him up when he did get targeted. Wyatt was used to fighting for himself, and the draft was going to force him into military academy. He had no genetic markers to become an ability user so he had already accepted the fact that he would probably die during his two years required military rotation after the academy. It was just a fact of life. Non ability users were just cannon fodder, and archaic abilities were highly restricted. Wyatt didn't think anything off it. That is until he found a marble in an old rift area. A marble that would change everything.

My fingers were slowly starting to grow back. I wanted to kill this thing more, and more as it continued to damage me. A snarl formed on my face. My wings flared out as I prepared to strike back. I watched the beast in front of me cautiously.

I needed to be careful. If he did that ripple thing again it wouldn't be nearly as easy to dodge as it was the first time. I shot towards the beast again. Swinging my body around his teeth as they snapped closed around nothing at all. I dug the new finger nubs into the tender flesh around the hole I was digging into his flesh.

I started ripping pieces out of him as I dug my toes into his tough hide as well. I slammed the hooks of my wings deep into his flesh. Further stabilizing my grip on his body. I kept ripping flesh out of his wound with so much single minded focus that I didn't see the him roll me into the reef that surrounded the island. My body screamed at the damage done to me as I was ripped free.

Both of the hooks on my wings burned as they were stretched further then they were meant to be capable of. I released a half breath of lightning into the water around me while I regained my bearings. That simple act saved my life as the big beast swerved away from the electrified water. I went for him again. I latched onto him again.

I slammed my hooks back into the creatures flesh. The creature writhed. It seemed to be regretting coming after something as crazy as me, but it was too pissed to leave me. I dug into the wound again. Biting, and ripping the damn things flesh without any care for the damage he'd done to me. My wrath activated, and it became that much easier to damage the fucking thing for a little while.

The beast slammed me into the ground again. I let go, and found myself free floating through the water. I shook off the pain again. I glanced at the beast as I regained my balance again. I snorted as the beast came for me again or at least I tried to snort. It wasn't nearly as impressive since I was underwater.

I dodged the snap of the creatures teeth, and dug my mouth deep into his wound. It was beginning to look like a bloody crater in the creatures flesh. It snapped at me, and got my tail. Yanking me away from the wound against my will. I dug my teeth into his fin, and let him rip my tail off so I could stay close to his wound.

The beast curled up its body as it tried to bit at me again, but it couldn't quite flex far enough to get me. My teeth clamped around a rib that had been revealed in all my digging. I ground my teeth like a saw. Cutting through the thick bone between me, and what I wanted. The taste of the marrow made me salivate.

If I had enough strength left after all this then I'm dragging this thing to shore so I could eat even more of him. He slammed me into the sea floor again, and broke his own half sawed through rib in the process. My teeth were still dug in deep so I didn't let go this time, but my body didn't like the damage that was being done to it as my limp broken wings dragged behind me in the water. I could still move so I pulled myself toward the wound again, and dug my freshly regrown fingers into the wound as I broke off some of the rib that was in my way. Then I shoved my head into the wound, and kept digging into the beast.

The stream of blood that leaked from the beasts wound turned into a slow torrent.

Leaving spatial elemental range.

What? I yanked my head out of its body, and jumped back off the creature. Snapping my broken limbs back into place as I drifted back toward the portal. I landed on the sea floor in front of the portal. I tried to regain the health, and limbs I'd lost while the beast was fleeing. I absorbed the mana in my lungs quickly.

Exhaling the plain mana less air as my lungs began refilling. I stood on the sea floor staring at the tail end of that beast as it swam away. Eternally grateful of my space element for the spatial awareness it granted me. It was the only reason all the important parts of my body were still intact. My head, and body screamed at me.

I wanted to swim after it, but that had to wait until I finished closing the portal. Taking some time to recover wouldn't hurt either. My wings felt like they were creaking as the water currents flowed over me. I didn't know what happened to the rest of my body, but it all hurt at the same time. The half of my tail that hadn't been ripped off was whipping back, and forth slowly in an agitated manner.

Part of me wanted to chase down the beast, and it made me start pacing in a bouncy buoyant manner. I kept turning around to make sure the beast didn't come after me from behind. I felt it when the portal collapsed. I felt the mental load of the system focusing my mana on the portal disappear. I swam up towards the surface as quickly as I could.

Reverting back to my original form as I did. I climbed up on the beach, and started walking towards the werewolves settlement. I tried to sense any other spatial rifts on the island. I knew there were three on the island, and one in the ocean for sure. I wasn't sure about any others.

I made sure I wasn't anywhere near the sand of the beach before collapsing to rest. I was pretty sure that thing could breath air, and it was big enough to come after me if I stayed close to the beach. I could feel my bonded coming closer quickly. They could probably feel my pain. I didn't have enough energy to shield them from my pain.

I'm writing another level up story called Reaper. This story will be getting released exclusively on amazon around christmas if I keep up the pace I've been writing it at. It's a level up story where the main character gets a system that gives him the abilities of the Grim Reaper himself. It's set in a different world than this one so please indulge yourself. I'll keep on updating you guys as I get work done on it if you want me to.
