Chapter 41: Darkness

They returned to the domed hall, standing side by side while they waited for the Elders to give them an answer. Sage’s palms were clammy as she glanced at her mother who gave her a small encouraging smile. Caspian stood with a blank expression on his face but subtly reached out to squeeze her hand.

“If the wolf is true to his word,” the silver-haired witch said to them calmly. “We will try to help the warlock.”

Sage let out a breath, clasping Caspian’s hand and squeezing.

“Sage,” the red-headed warlock interjected, “Be prepared for what the spell requires. Even a sliver of darkness is still darkness.”

The Elders dismissed them but Sage couldn’t wait before she threw her arms around Caspian’s neck.

“Thank you,” she mumbled.

He chuckled. “I won’t be the one casting the spell,” he told her. “Don’t thank me yet.”
