Chapter 49

Todd missed having his head taken off by a fraction of an inch when the pastor pulled a two-by-four chunk of wood from behind his back and swung at Todd. Hard. When Todd ducked, the wood missed its mark, but it also prevented him from firing.

Bounding forward in two long, quick steps, the pastor swung at him again. At this range, Todd would likely kill the man, and he wanted to avoid that at all costs. Holstering his gun, Todd ducked low, yelled, charged forward, and rammed the guy in the middle with his head. The piece of wood clattered to the floor, and pain sliced through Todd’s ribcage.

The pastor backpedaled and expelled a harsh grunt from Todd’s impact. Their momentum carried them back until the pastor slammed into a wall, jarring Todd. Finally, someone was hitting a wall besides Nick and him. Todd staggered back a few steps, shaking his head before dropping down hard on the wooden floor.

The pastor sagged to the floor, gasping for breath. “You’re not a gambler,” he wheezed.
