Chapter 48

There was a spiderweb of track marks and lines across the dirt floor. It was impossible to tell how long they’d been there, since the damp air kept the ground from drying and the tracks from fading away. A dozen or so trunks were scattered in groups around the area.

“Shit,” Todd grumbled, hurrying to the closest cluster of trunks. Nick went to another group. The first trunk Todd reached for had no locks on it; a quick look around and he realized none of them did. He flipped open the lid, slammed it shut, and moved to the next.

After checking the fourth trunk, he looked to Nick and asked, “Anything?”

“No.” Nick gently closed the lid before he straightened and shook his head.

“Goddamn!” Todd spat and swiped a hand at the closest trunk. He and Nick moved among the trunks, checking them all. “They’re all empty.”
