"What about your job?" He raised the question she had asked herself more times than she could count the night before.
She didn't want to give him something to use to convince her to stay so she pretended it didn't matter much. "I think I've saved more than enough lives to make up for the ones I destroyed. I should go into early retirement and enjoy the rest of my life with my mother and several pets."
He treated her entire statement as a joke. "Retirement? You're not even thirty!"
"That's the whole point, right? How can it be called 'early retirement' if I'm not much younger than I should be?" She ate a piece of her bacon to avoid having to answer his questions, but that only lasted a moment.
"Are you sure this is what you want?"
Even if it was not what she wanted, it wouldn't be his responsibility to help her get what she wanted. She nodded. "I'll be fine."
