Chapter 103

Chuck steals Michael away without giving any sort of explanation, leaving Jo alone. She tries to fall asleep, but after a few minutes, she gets bored and decides to take a walk around the bunker until Michael comes back. She passes Meg, who's looking for something, but she doesn't offer to help. Jo hasn't really spoken to Meg since they both got trapped here, and she doesn't really want to change that now.

Jo meanders through the halls, and she can't help but remember when she first got here, and couldn't figure out where she was going to save her life. It's funny how never leaving a building helps you figure the place out so much.

She hears indistinct murmuring not far away, and as she gets closer, she recognizes Lucifer's voice saying, "I don't know. I liked him at first, but now he's just kinda prissy."

Both bored and curious, Jo stands behind the corner and eavesdrops on whatever conversation she just discovered, because it sounds like some juicy gossip, which is better than nothing.

"I can't believe you liked him!" Charlie says, and, as the one person here who seems to like everyone, it's certainly strange to hear.

"He seemed really cool at first!" Lucifer insists.

"He was cool in the first scene and that is it," Charlie says.

Of course they're talking about movies. Jo does find herself wondering what kind of movies Satan enjoys, though, so she continues eavesdropping.

"He was cool until he took off his helmet," Lucifer says. "Especially after watching eight, and knowing his backstory, he's actually very inspirational. He was wronged unapologetically by someone he thought he could trust, and instead of moping about it, he decided to do something.

"I think he should have killed Snoke much sooner instead of bowing to him like a puppy. He was definitely capable of killing the guy much earlier, and he would have had the whole First Order on his side. And he should've killed Hux, too, because they're like little kids trying to get their parents to like them more than their siblings, and it's annoying."

Charlie scoffs. "Wow, Lucifer, tell me how you really feel," she says with a laugh. "But it's also so stupid! He's just a spoiled, whiny little teenager who takes out his anger on everything and everyone in his path, and so what if Luke messed up? He was just doing what he thought he had to to keep the whole galaxy from falling apart. If Kylo had even bothered to to the guy instead of destroying everything Luke had built just for kicks, maybe they could've talked it out and they wouldn't have these problems."

"Why should that be Kylo's job?" Lucifer demands. "It was Luke who screwed up, and Kylo acted like any sane person would when someone you trust and look up to decides to ruin your life. As far as he knew, that was the end for him. You can't hold that against him.

"Personally, I think Luke deserved to watch everything he loved crumble like that, and he deserved to live out the rest of his life alone, and I think Kylo deserved everything. He could have taken charge, and he could have ended the Resistance a long time ago if Snoke hadn't held him back. Rey never would have entered the picture and he never would have lost sight of what he needed to do."

"Are you talking about ?" Jo asks, finally stepping into view. Charlie and Lucifer are sitting up against the walls of the hallway, Lucifer toying with what appears to be a lightsaber, but it's not activated, so she could be wrong.

Charlie grins. "Yep! Wanna join us, and tell this guy how Kylo Ren is a stain on the good name of ?"

Jo chuckles. "No, I think I'm good, but thanks. Hey, Charlie, I think Meg's looking for you. I mean, she's looking for something. I'm just kinda assuming it's you."

"Oh, probably," she says. "I'll go find her, thanks. And Lucifer?"

"Hmm?"

"Kylo Ren still sucks." With a teasing smile, she stands up and walks away, leaving Jo and Lucifer alone.

Jo glance down the hallway, a big part of her wanting to leave, but she can't help but ask, "Is that a lightsaber?"

Lucifer glances up at her, his lips pressed together tightly in a straight line. He activates the lightsaber, a long ray of red light shooting out of it, followed by two shorter ones off the sides of the base. Kylo Ren's lightsaber.

"Why do you have a lightsaber?" she asks.

Lucifer doesn't answer, instead just turning the lightsaber off and fiddling with it in his hands again, not even looking in her direction.

"What, touchy subject?" Jo says mockingly.

Lucifer's grip on the lightsaber tightens, but he stops himself, returning to normal almost instantly.

"Are you giving me the silent treatment?" Jo asks.

Lucifer just twirls the lightsaber around.

"Wow, real mature," she says sarcastically.

Lucifer sighs. "It's either silence or fighting. You really think the silence is the immature one?"

"What are you talking about? You love fighting," Jo reminds him. "You fight with people like it's your day job."

Lucifer just glares at her for a moment, but instead of responding, he looks back to his lightsaber, not to use it, but just as something to focus on.

"Okay, this is weird," Jo says. "You're usually itching for a fight. Are you okay?"

"I'm fine."

"If you were fine, you would've tried to hit me with that by now," Jo says, gesturing to the lightsaber.

Lucifer activates it, the red light shooting out of it again. Jo expects him to send it her way, just to prove he's fine if nothing else, but instead, he swings it over his head, and the blade goes through the wall behind him, not leaving a mark. "It's just light."

Jo raises an eyebrow. She saw him fight with a lightsaber a few months ago, against Charlie and Gabriel back in chapter 33. Those were real lightsabers, so she knows he's able to make the light tangible. Why isn't he this time? What's changed?

Oh. "Is it because of Sam?"

Lucifer raises an eyebrow. "Is the fact that my saber is just light because of Sam? Do I even have to dignify that with a response?"

"No, I mean is your new no-fighting policy because of him?" Jo clarifies.

Lucifer doesn't respond, just looking back down at his lightsaber. He runs a hand along it, as if admiring all the small details of his own creation.

"I'll take your silence as a yes," she says. "The you I know wouldn't stop fighting for anyone's sake."

Again, Lucifer doesn't respond, carefully avoiding meeting her gaze.

"You really love him, don't you?" Jo asks.

Without looking at her, Lucifer says, "That's none of your business."

She cocks her head in confusion. "Why are you so defensive about that?"

"I'm not," Lucifer deadpans.

Jo just looks at him for a moment, the scoffs. "Oh, I get it he's the Rey to your Kylo. You're just embarrassed that you like him, because you're so used to not liking anyone or anything, and you don't want anyone to know you actually have feelings."

Lucifer reaches a hand out, and she finds herself unable to breath, her feet a few inches off the ground. Lucifer stands up, just inches away, looking down at her with clenched teeth.

Suddenly, he lets her go, and she falls down, like a puddle on the ground. Lucifer just watches her for a few seconds as she catches her breath, until he walks away without another word.
