Best Interests

It was the morning of Victoria's birthday and she had spent the night at Deji's place. She was woken up with a phone call from her mom.

"Hello mummy, good morning ma," Victoria greeted her mom over the phone. 

"Good morning, happy birthday my darling daughter," her mom said to her.

"Thank you, mummy."

"This year will bring you joy and laughter, all that you lay your hands to do, will prosper," her mom prayed for her.

"Amen mummy."

"And most important of all you will get a husband this new year."

Victoria started coughing. A year ago, when she was celebrating her 27th birthday, her mom had made this same prayer for her, and Victoria had said amen with high hopes that Emeka was going to pop the question and she would be married before she turned 28, but he broke her heart instead. 

"Better stop coughing and say Amen, or don't you want to get married?"
