Chapter 7

“Sure,” Adam said. “I’ll be right back.”

While he was gone, Phoenix crept in and looked around. He saw nothing lacy or feminine. It was a typical bachelor’s pad in a black-and-white motif with a bit of classy chrome and a few throw rugs and paintings on the walls to lend color. There were things dropped here and there, but he wouldn’t call it messy. He looked at the pictures he had displayed and didn’t see a woman’s photograph, or even one of his family. Most of what he had were simple little knickknacks. Since the room cried out for decoration, he settled for a bowl of fruit on the bar between the kitchen and the living room. Phoenix would have expected a vase of flowers, but he knew intuitively that flowers were a little too feminine looking for some bachelors.

Just then Adam came back with a cold glass of water in his hand and handed it to Phoenix. “You feel okay? I mean, the heat isn’t getting to you, is it?”
