Chapter 5
Despite his weakness, he managed to pull himself up into the seat, and sat hunched over as he held his stomach. As the man drove, he saw some bright lights coming into view and stared, his eyes wide with a combination of fear and curiosity.
When the truck swerved into the bright parking area, the man leaned over, opened the door for him to get out, and said, “Well, good luck.” He watched him as he scrambled out, and when he saw him stumbling toward the diner, he jumped out to help him. “Gracie!” he called out after he had put him on a stool at the counter. “This guy here’s had a little bad luck. I found him stumbling around out on the highway. It seems he’s lost, and I’d appreciate it if you’d give him a good meal and put it on my tab. I doubt he’s got any money.”
Gracie smiled. “Another one of your strays, huh?”
“Well, what goes around comes around, so they say. Just treat him good, okay?”
