Defend the City

Editor: Atlas Studios

The next day.

Wang Lun stood on the city wall with his soldiers. The bandits had arrived at the bottom of Yale City, just as the letter promised.

"Is that the city lord up there?"

A huge, black-bearded man rode out on a horse and pointed at the city wall above.

Wang Lun held the shotgun in his hand and loudly responded: "Yes, I am Baron Wang Lun, the lord of this city!"

The black-bearded man snorted and said, "I don't care what kind of baron you are. You only have two choices: surrender and hand over all your treasures, or perish into ashes along with this city!"

Instead of being afraid, Wang Lun spoke with a smile. "If you want my treasures, you have to give me something in exchange!"

The black-bearded man didn't say another word, but turned his horse around and returned to the massive formation behind him.

The bandit seemed to have a high chance of winning the battle, with 500 men assembled and standing beneath the city wall. At a glance, they were like a colony of black ants.

"My lord, please seek refuge—they look like they are about to attack!"

Hallmark's instincts as a knight told him that an exchange of blood would soon be inevitable.

Wang Lun revealed a smile and said, "Do you think I'm afraid of them attacking the city?"

Upon hearing this statement from Wang Lun, Hallmark turned to the former with a puzzled look.

Has this baron been scared out of his mind? Where did he get this confidence from? The enemies clearly outnumber us by a wide margin.

At that moment, the black-bearded man had returned to the square and was speaking to his chief.

Soon after, the chief unsheathed a sword from his waist, raised it high, and pointed it at the city wall. He widened his mouth to the max.

"It has begun. Archers, don't be in a hurry to use your bow and arrows yet."

Wang Lun said.

Wang Lun didn't purchase a whole lot of arrows. He considered archers to be crucial in this situation, possibly deciding the outcome of the battle.

The bandits at the bottom of the city wall flooded forward.

The siege weapons used by the bandits were long ladders, and the bandits climbed up the ladders at a fast pace.

"Get ready for battle!"

Hallmark gripped a huge blade in his hand and reminded the soldiers around him.

Wang Lun lifted his shotgun in his hand, pointing its muzzle at the bandits who would soon climb over the city wall. He slowly positioned his index finger on the trigger.

Bang!

He fired a bullet, and his body trembled from the recoil.

In the next second, the first of the bandits had fallen.

"Nice shot, my lord!"

Hallmark couldn't help but exclaim at the sight.

Wang Lun, on the other hand, simply chuckled and aimed the shotgun at the rest of the enemies.

Bang! Bang!

He fired another two shots in quick succession, and two more bandits collapsed.

"We're not going to be displaced again, are we?!"

"I thought life was starting to get better."

"Yeah, why are we still running into bandits?"

The people of the city weren't allowed to go up to the city walls and had to watch the city for when the bandits would appear.

Their hopes were dashed when they saw some of the bandits on the verge of climbing over the city walls.

Some people had already started to put their hands together and prayed for the blessings of God.

Others, on the other hand, didn't care what the outcome would be. They continued eating their breakfast, even taking the time to pull out a chair to sit back and watch the show.

"Do those merchants think that nothing will happen to them since they're rich? When the bandits take over the city, the merchants will surely be robbed of their assets. Let's see how arrogant they are when that happens!"

Someone cursed as he observed the nonchalant merchants.

"Archers, stop them from climbing up the ladder!" Wang Lun yelled.

The archers who had been waiting for orders immediately pulled their bowstrings.

Buzz! Buzz!

The bowstrings trembled with a crisp sound as the arrows flew out.

The arrows were shot at the lowermost part of the ladder. It was where the bandits were gathered and preparing to ascend, following those who had climbed ahead.

More than 20 arrows swooped down swiftly and only came to a stop after penetrating the bandits' bodies.

None of the bandits survived the arrows, and they all collapsed.

At the same time, Hallmark also attacked. One of the bandits had just revealed his head over the city wall and was immediately met with a large blade in front of him.

In an instant, an arc of blood sprayed across the air.

"Soldiers, show them the results of our training!"

Hallmark shouted at the soldiers around him.

Bandits continued to appear on top of the ladders from other positions, but all of them faced the same ending.

"Spear-wielding soldiers, attack!"

Hallmark gave the order.

Soldiers with shorter weapons stepped back, allowing their comrades with long spears to step forward. The spear-wielding soldiers raised their weapons high and fiercely jabbed down with the razor-sharp tip.

The bandits who were climbing up the ladder had no time, or rather, no room to dodge at all.

They could neither get up nor down.

On the other hand, archers were still aggressively firing arrows at the bandits on the surface, while Wang Lun continued blasting his shotgun from above the city wall.

The chief of the bandits in the distance revealed a bitter expression.

"Where are our original supporters in the city?"

The chief leaned over and asked the man beside him.

"I don't know. I guess they're afraid to show up!"

The bandit chief didn't feel good as he watched his men die one by one.

"What kind of weapon is that? How is it possible that it's so powerful?"

Looking at the archers on the city wall and the shotgun in Wang Lun's hand, the bandit chief asked in confusion.

"I don't know! Most of our brothers were killed by it! I think we'd better retreat!"

The man replied.

Retreat? We're just gonna give up after sacrificing so many men?

But if we don't retreat, we'll have even more casualties.

The bandit chief couldn't make up his mind.

"Retreat!"

In the end, he made his decision.

"They're retreating already?" Hallmark wiped the blood stains away from his face, "My lord, they're retreating!"

Wang Lun put down his shotgun, breathed a sigh of relief, and smiled, "Yes, my brave knight, they've been defeated by our bravery!"

Intermediately after, all the soldiers in the city raised their weapons high in the air and jumped to their feet. This was the first time some of them had ever won a battle.

However, some reacted differently.

In a hidden location, a man in bright clothing stared at the retreating bandits with dismay.

He didn't say a word, but turned around and quietly left that place.

"Hallmark, lead some men to clean up the battlefield!"

Wang Lun walked down the city wall.

"Yes, my lord!"

"The few of you come with me!"

Hallmark hurried outside the city wall with a group of soldiers.

"Bran, order all the construction workers to fortify the city walls. This city is still too fragile. We will surely fall the next time the enemy arrives."

Wang Lun's words were like those of a king.

The war was won, and not a single one of Wang Lun's soldiers were sacrificed, which was a great thing for the limited population of Yale City.

Since there was no need to replenish troops, the only other thing that could be improved would be their weapons and armor. Wang Lun had noticed the effects of the bow and arrow in the battle earlier.

Had it not been for the suppression of the bow and arrow, Yale City would have been taken over by now.
