Chapter 68

Chris got in the passenger seat and laid his head back while Ron started the car, then drove toward the exit. As they turned onto National Avenue and headed toward Ron’s apartment in the center of town, Chris closed his eyes and let out a deep breath. He could feel Ron’s gaze on him, but he kept his eyes closed and tried to accept the plan that was in motion. Ron was there, and soon his dad and brother would be as well, but despite their presence, Chris couldn’t shake his bad feeling. Today had started out so sweet, yet had somehow turned into a nightmare.

“This is best,” Ron said.

“That’s what Dylan says.”

“Thomas will call in his squadron to protect you if it comes to that.”

“Yes, but—”

“Clearly the hospital isn’t safe,” Ron said. “I can’t imagine what the bastard hoped to gain by attacking you there.”

“We weren’t expecting it.”

“Well,” Ron said with a sigh, “we’re taking you out of the formula so we can do what we need to.”
