Chapter 56

Chris looked around the cemetery, hoping to see Ron walking toward them. “Ron?” he asked. “Are you okay?”

Nolan stood up, crying out and holding his bleeding nose.

“Stay with me,” Dylan said to Chris.

Chris nodded, but his gaze was on the cemetery.

“I was scared,” Nolan yelled. “He has evidence to condemn me. I have to do what he says.”

Dylan said, “So why send those files to us?”

Nolan said, “It’s in my best interest to help you bring down the crooked cops.”

“Yourbest interest,” Dylan scoffed. “You’ll still be going to jail. I’ll do whatever it takes to ensure that.”

“I have a debt to pay,” Nolan said.

Dylan slammed his fist into Nolan’s face again, then shoved him against the wall.

“I’m not going to jail,” Nolan said.

Dylan’s voice got lower and more direct. “You’d better hope the killer is caught soon, because if my brother is harmed in the slightest, I willbe wanted for your murder, do you understand?”

“I’m sorry,” Nolan whispered.
