Chapter 33

James placed his hand on Chris’s head and slid his fingers through his hair. “I won’t let anyone hurt you,” James whispered.

Chris looked into James’s eyes. “I’m worried about you.”

“I’ll be okay.” James lightly kissed him on the lips. “I promise.” 16

After James left the next morning, Chris headed to the highway and toward the small town of Sleeper. The twenty-three mile drive promised scenic views and time to figure out what he would do when he arrived at Sleeper to find Charles Garoutte.

Chris set the cruise control and stayed in the line of traffic, with a semi ahead of him and a red Ford truck a few car lengths behind. He wasn’t concerned about being followed, but he couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling rising up from his belly. Was it the truck that bothered him, or something more?
