Bakhong and Meremong were two close friends, they lived in a village nearby a rivulet. They eat, drink and sleep together. They used to go to the field and hunting together. On certain occasion they use to ask each other whether, one will sacrifice one's life for one another.

One fine day they went for hunting with a plan to stay overnight. After reaching the hunting spot, they decided and agreed upon that one should stay back for cooking and the other would go for hunting. Meremong stayed for cooking while Bakhong went hunting.

Meremong was in a very exciting mood for the night was so conducive for hunting and his friend Bakhong would surely come back with a prized hunting. After collecting sufficient fire woods and edible leaves, he prepared a delicious meal for both of them and was eagerly waiting for his friend to come back from hunting and was longing to see what his friend would bring. The night was very eerie for Bakhong , any way; he came across a majestic stag with his perfect horns trotting by the brook most probably to quench his thirst after a long evening of grazing. Bakhong did not miss the chance of his hunting skill and immediately pulled the trigger of arrow after a perfect aim, the arrow found its target and pierced right into the heart of the stag and lo! The stag was lying dead. While he was heading towards his friend eagerly to show what he had killed, most unfortunate would have been, a band of head hunters encountered him. Alas! Bakhong could not defend himself since he was all alone; he was killed then and there and was beheaded. The beheaded head was taken away leaving behind the remaining parts of the body but strangely the heart of Bakhong was alive. The bond of friendship was so strong between them that Bakhong though beheaded was determined to meet his friend and to convey him about the stag he had killed and of his misfortune.

Since his friend was not returning back from his hunting ground as he normally does, Meremong started to become furious. The atmosphere was so eerie he was hearing strange and odd sounds from the woods and to add fuel to his curiosity the stick which he was holding the pot on the fire place could not hold anymore as it was burnt off and fell extinguishing the fire. There was total darkness. While, Meremong was trying to re-kindle the fire he saw a strange figure configuring in front of him. No doubt that it must be his friend Bakhong, he welcome him and was telling him what delicious food he had prepared for both of them and inquired what did he get from hunting. In reply the headless figure (Bakhong) asked him not to bother about his hunting but asked him; tell me, if I am wounded, what would you do? Meremong replied; I would take outmost care of you. Meremong insist on asking as to what he had killed or caught. Bakhong repeated the same question; If I were wounded or beheaded, What would you do? Meremong replied; stop asking silly question and help me lit the fire. Meremong laid their meal on the pieces of palm leaves and asked Bakhong to fill his stomach before the food got cold. Bakhong requested Meremong to feed him with his own hands, he readily agreed without knowing what was actually stored for him. Gradually the fire woods started to catch flames which resorted to visibility of one another. Bakhong being exhausted and hungry pleaded Meremong to feed him. Meremong enthusiastically grabbed the rice as much as he could grasp in his palm and advanced towards Bakhong but to the utter surprise of Bakhong, he could see only a body without head standing in front of him. He was shocked and was in enigmatic situation as to whether his friend Bakhong was really talking to him or any other evil spirit was talking to him so long. At this instance, Meremong was about to collapse when Bakhong touched him and said, My friend, don't be afraid, I am your friend Bakhong, have been beheaded by the band of head- hunters while I was coming back to you after hiding the stag which I had kill. Even if I am beheaded, I came to meet you and to convey this message. You are my best friend so please do something so that both of us reach our village. No sooner did Meremong saw his headless friend taking to him, instantaneously, he took up to his heels and started running, forgetting ever promises that they made to sacrifice one's life for one another. Bakhong cried and pleaded not to leave him alone but Meremong was not in a position to look back to hear any ones word at that moment, he run like a Cheetah haphazardly in order to escape from the scene and to reach his village as soon as he could. Bakhong continued pleading and was also following Meremong rampantly, the blood oozing out from all over the wounds of his body while the intestine also hooked out off his stomach. At last Meremong reached the village and narrates to the villagers about the incident, astonishment of all the villagers, they saw a body without head (Bakhong) with intestine fallen out and full of blood soaked over the body following Meremong. By the time Bakhong's headless body reached at the gathering and dropped death. After narrating the whole episode of the horrific incident and their consequent hunting, Meremong also breathed his last.
