-Back to Black Lake-
After Fleur and I decided to face the Grindylows, we prepared ourselves and began casting several offensive spells at them, in a sequence that would have left any master duelist impressed.
However, even with our fervent attack, the Grindylows continued to come at us, only even more irritated.
"Why don't these creatures stop appearing?" Fleur asked irritably, stunning what was probably the twentieth Grindylow trying to attack her.
"The sound of our combat must be attracting those nearby" I told her, punching a Grindylow in the stomach, and as it grunted in pain I used wandless magic to freeze it.
I then turned around with my wand already pointed at another Grindylow, and quickly cast a cutting spell that severed its arm and horn.
And I didn't have time to relax after eliminating this little water demon, as I immediately began to be flanked and attacked by another six of them.
'Damn, I trained to fight in water, but not against this amount of enemies' I thought, frowning.
"Urgh, this way we'll stay here forever" Fleur said, managing to eliminate three more Grindylows.
And looking at her I could see that she was getting exhausted and weak, and it was only thanks to her incredible flexibility and reflex that prevented her from being hurt by these creatures.
'I can feel that the Merpeople are still around us watching us, but they will only interfere if we are truly in danger' I thought, frowning.
'And if they intervene then it means we failed in the task' and knowing this I clicked my tongue.
And while I was thinking about this, Fleur began to swim towards me slowly, until we were back to back.
"We need to finish this quickly, the task time is almost up" I said, realizing that we had been in this situation for almost 20 minutes.
"But how do we do this? There are many of them, and besides being in their habitat, they still have some resistance to magic" Fleur said, looking around at the creatures that surrounded us cautiously.
'She's right' I had a frown on my face, 'And even if we try to run away they'll just follow us to where the hostages are, and we'll have to fight them again'
'The only option now is to eliminate them all, but that's easier said than done' and looking at the Grindylows that were appearing more and more I cursed.
'If we were on the surface and on land I could use a long-range attack to finish them all off, but here in the water with Fleur nearby it's going to be difficult'
But even knowing the disadvantageous situation we were in, I didn't panic or despair.
And keeping calm I started to think, knowing that my mind works much better in moments like this.
And this proved true when the next moment an idea started to come to my mind, 'Well, I said that casting a large-scale spell underwater would be very difficult, but I forgot to take into account that the water itself that surrounds me can be used as fuel for my spell'
And now that I had a plan to get us out of this situation I turned to Fleur, "Fleur, hold on to me" I said to her.
"What?" she asked, but instead of answering I wrapped my left arm around her waist and pulled her towards me.
And Fleur was initially surprised to feel me grab her, but then she did as I asked and hugged me tightly.
And as soon as I felt Fleur's arms grab me, I started my counterattack.
"I suggest you step aside," I said in Mermish loudly, so the Merpeople could hear.
And they heard, being surprised both that I knew how to speak their language and that I knew they were here.
But after giving them this warning I didn't pay any more attention to them.
I then raised my right arm with my wand and began to circle it above my head.
And when I did that I felt my magic connect with the lake, and then the water around me started to spin with my body and Fleur's as the center.
I could feel a great resistance coming from the water, but I didn't stop, and with each passing second the speed at which it rotated increased.
And because of the moving water the Grindylows couldn't get close to me and Fleur, but stopping them from reaching us wasn't enough for me, and so I started swinging my wand faster and harder.
And following my command the water began to spin violently, and in a few seconds a whirlpool formed around us, and the current of it was so powerful that it began to suck the Grindylows into it.
And I didn't stop when I saw the creatures getting trapped in the turbulent whirlpool. In fact, upon seeing this I used more magic and increased the power and pressure of the whirlpool.
And the Merpeople who had not yet moved away realized what I was doing, and seeing the strength of the whirlpool they began to swim away in fright.
And it didn't take long for this whirlpool to grow and become a maelstrom, consuming and sucking in everything around it.
And I didn't even blink as I saw the Grindylows being hit by the sharp, heavy waters of the maelstrom, injuring, crushing, and even dismembering some of them.
"Mon Dieu" Fleur sussurrou.
And looking at the girl in my arms I saw her looking at the bloody scene that was happening in front of her with her eyes wide open, but she wasn't terrified or disgusted like I expected.
Actually, she was in awe, looking at the maelstrom that crushed the Grindylows as if she were viewing a magnificent work of art.
'In fact, none of my friendships are normal' I thought with an ironic smile.
But shaking my head I refocused on my spell, and with my senses I could feel that almost all of the Grindylows surrounding us were trapped in the maelstrom, and those that weren't trapped were already fleeing away.
And with that I knew it was time to end this fight that had already taken a long time.
And concentrating my magic with a single intention, I raised my arm with the wand high up, and that was the command necessary for the maelstrom around me and Fleur to spin even more.
And all the water I controlled began to rise upward, overtaking the surface while still spinning violently, taking all the Grindylows with it.
And those standing outside the lake in the stands looked at the huge rotating pillar of water that came out of the lake and rose into the sky with dumbfounded and shocked looks.
"Holy crap!"
"What are those things in the water?!"
"First a whirlpool and now this!?"
"What the fuck is going on down there?!"
And no one could take their eyes off the black lake, both because of the abnormality that was happening in it and because of the fact that they were finally seeing something happen.
From the beginning of the task, everyone watched the lake with apprehension and expectation, but after some time just looking at the water without being able to see what the champions were doing, it ended up creating a boring and tedious atmosphere.
However, when everyone thought that the task was going to end without something exciting happening, a whirlpool suddenly appeared in the lake.
And this whirlpool over time got bigger and faster, to the point that those in the stands could feel the wet wind generated by it hitting they bodies.
And those with good vision were able to see that there were some things being dragged by the powerful waters of the whirlpool, which had turned into a maelstrom.
And when everyone thought that nothing else was going to happen, the maelstrom began to rise into the sky in the form of a pillar, where everyone could then see that those strange things they had seen were actually some kind of creature, which were being torn apart by the water.
And as the wizards and witches in the stands stared with rapt attention at the lake, the great spinning pillar of water reached its highest point.
The maelstrom then began to close in on itself, which only increased the violence and speed of the water, until it suddenly imploded, collapsing as it spread water and the dead bodies of Grindylows throughout the lake.
And those who were closer to the edge of the black lake even had to protect themselves to avoid being hit by the water or by any severed and torn limbs of the water demons.
And for a few seconds the bloody rain continued, with everyone looking at the sky or the lake in complete and absolute silence, with incredulous and terrified looks.
And after some time the waters of the black lake became calm again, of course, disregarding the blood, organs and limbs of the dead creatures floating on the surface.
And while the lake was calm again the same could not be said for the people in the stands, who after a long and tense silence finally woke up from their dazed states.
And now that everyone started to react to what they just saw, the stands were filled with shocked voices and screams.
"Merlin's beard! What was this?!" the Bagman exclaimed, saying what most people were thinking, "Something unexpected just happened, and I can't tell if what my eyes saw is true or not!"
And this time Bagman didn't say that in an attempt to make the audience pay attention to him or make them more excited.
Actually, he really was in disbelief at what he just witnessed.
"It seems that one of our champions has met with the Grindylows, one of the races of creatures that live in the black lake" the Headmaster began to explain in a calm tone, bringing everyone's attention to him.
He then looked at the lake with a gleam in his eyes, "And this must be the result of the confrontation between them."
And hearing that this entire calamity was caused because of a clash between a champion and a group of magical creatures made everyone's shock increase.
And now on everyone's mind there was only one question.
'Which champion did this?'
End.
