Chapter Four

Chapter four

River

I can't say I was looking forward to seeing my dad, He never really liked me. He's not even my real dad. My mom said my real dad died in a car accident on his way to the hospital. My mom met my dad later that week, and a few months later he married her. I love my dad but he's always at work or with friends. He won't like Oakley, I just know he won't. She's a bumpkin, but then again so am I. My mom left me her jewelry box and her favorite earrings. I still can't believe she was sick, she had been keeping it from me too. For 6 months, she had Breast cancer and she didn't even tell me. When dad finally pulls up to the driveway and gets out of the car I finally get a good look at him. He's shaved, he seems fine, calm even. It's strange, I thought he would have seemed to be more depressed. I mean he loved my mom so much. He didn't even come to the funeral. He said he had work, but I don't believe him. I think he was at home mourning her. He really wouldn't go to work instead of her funeral right? I mean that's outrageous.

"It's just like I remember it," he says.

"Yeah, I like it a lot more than the city."

"I suppose. I wouldn't want to live here though."

"Are we moving back to the city?"

"Yes. Go get your things."

"WHAT!? Right now? But I have school tomorrow!"

"You enrolled her?" my father asked my Grammy.

"The school year was about to begin. I wasn't going to let her miss school!"

"Great. I have work tomorrow! WHAT DO YOU EXPECT ME TO DO ESTELLA?!?!?"

"Put in for a leave."

"Do you know how many days I missed work for Emily? They won't let me!"

"Yes, they will! She called me every day. You were never there during the important stuff because you were at work! You only came to visit her when you got off work!! You didn't bother to come to her funeral, because of your work!!! You are such a cazzo malato Anthony!"

"Conosco la tua lingua, strega."

Grammy stares at him as if he had insured her.

"I'll come get Elizabeth at Thanksgiving." He storms to his car and drives away.

I hate it when he calls me that.
