I was a trader. Wasn't a glamorous job, but I also wasn't a frontliner fighting the Empires war against V.O.I.D. that was a death sentence. I knew we were losing with only glitterworlds having enough resources and technology to actually put up any resistance. Thing was even if we retook everything from what Information I could get from deserters or those I exchanged with. We didn't even know where the hell they came from. See I was a Shipcracker myself before faking my death. Did it all through taking the trade vessel by faking the last owners identity through a biosculpture pod.
We were going to lose.
A miracle would just prolong the war for say another 20 years. And even if we knew where V.O.I.Ds planets where it would be a suicidal attack at best. The only thing I did now was collect bits and bobs that I found interesting through trading on the rimworlds away from the frontlines as a bulk goods trader. You wouldn't believe the expensive bionics people are willing to sell at an undercut price because they spent all their time making them instead of spending time farming to get food. It's not my problem if anything it just allowed me to keep my practice tinkering away on the best tech in the market.
My crew got paid a fixed wage, and although I dealt with a mutiny or two for them not getting enough after a really good haul I dealt with it well enough.
If anyone asked, well let's say I didn't launch myself through space, land on an enemy ship and clear them room by room all this time for nothing. If anything I felt that the mutineers were weak and disatifying to wipe out. When you go from biologically and bionically enhanced superhumans to fleshy un- enhanced meatbags it gets a little underwhelming. Besides I didn't even have any of my Shipcracker bionics on because I was trying to improve them. The mutiny ended before even one of my crewmates that where loyalists could even try to defend me. Which to me unknowingly resulted in the ones left swearing to never take action against me. Aside from of course Crag who ripped one of the mens leg off and used it as a club. To say he demoralized them would be like saying the blowing up of the Galaxy Trade World in 2911 didn't make the Empire go on a century long warpath. Besides Crag hadn't been able to rip apart someone for a month.
Crag my Chief of Security the crazy bastard had an innate ability to tame and get along with animals. Which was probably related to his hobby of fistfighting bears, thrumbo and anything more then 500 pounds into submission. I had the man scanned for bionics as once watched as he ripped a bears head off its body because it roared at him while we went to deliver a shipment. To then hang it up with the others on his wall.
(I did not know he kept a collection)
The scan came back with him having no bionics, but everything else was literally muscle. He had no skin tissue as this 7"4 hulk of a man was literally all muscle aside from his 250% dense bones and nerves that somehow weren't completely destroyed. Another detail that made him a biological wonder was how he had so much testosterone in his veins that they were visibly yellow. I actually used how his heart pumps absurdly pure and insanely above human quality blood to design a bionic heart about 2 centurys ahead of its time.
Crag was the very definition of masculinity. He never took bullshit from anyone, but actually listened to reason.
The only reasonable explanation I knew for Crag being Crag was the fact that I bought him off some slavers who were also mad scientists. They somehow deemed him a failure which made me wonder what else they were cooking in there. After I bought him the guy made an oath to be my stout defender so they probably kidnapped him off some outback medieval world. But the guy has held his end of the bargain for 10 years, he never seemed to age, and we had grown in the company of each other. Crag is one of the main reasons I even worked out as believe it or not the guys really supportive when he's not ripping people in half.
Aside from Crag I had also bought another slave off the Scientists who they also said was a failure. Seeing how Crag was a failure yet a beast of a man I bought another one, a guy named Kane. For some reason every slaves name on the dossier started with a c,k or q. When I bought him I was a little dissapointed when I didn't get another Crag, but was presently surprised when I was informed they were a trained doctor. Upon hearing that I put them through a test that I got from a medic when I asked to be certified to take additional adrenaline and other medical supplies for Shipcracking. I then stole a copy of the test they gave me memorized the answers and cheated it once I asked to take the test again. They surprisingly passed as the medic buddy I had said that the test was at least two times harder then the ones to become an actual doctor.
Kane passed with flying colours only messing up on a question that had no right answer and was purely there to screw people up. To which he commented on it having no right answer and moved on. This test was failed by every other person that was put into the position of doctor with the highest grade on it being a 28%. This of course was due to its obsurdly low time limit of 45 minuites, and having 50 questions. This imediately earned Kane the position of Chief Doctor granting him the lovely job of having to manage the other chucklefucks underneath him. Man it felt good not having to deal with them. Though, and I don't know if they were pre programmed to do this, Kane also swore loyalty and said he would bring himself to commit himself to any task asked of me. I in a fleeting moment of wondering what I wanted most in life I said one word "survival".
Kane the ever devoted son of a gun then proceeded to accumulate a stash of Luciferium through any means. He planned to make its lifesaving effects last longer, be more potent, and manipulated it so it dosen't blow up a persons bloodstream when it isn't taken. To do this he took any money he made from being a Chief Doctor and traded any silver he made for luciferium whenever we visited a settlement. One thing I had noticed was a suspicious pattern of settlements becoming sick whenever they refused to sell luciferium.
This sudden epidemic would usually end in two scenarios. Kane would trade some medicine for luciferium, or they would strangely drop dead within the next 24 hours. To which no one would have qualms about Kane nabbing the luciferium as everuone else would be to busy looting or dead. Recently after seeing my use of Crag, Kane also decided to see if they could use Crags genes for anything. They surprisingly found out that if Crag were to take luciferium he'd have a 200% increase to his abilitys effectively making him stronger then even those V.O.I.D. monstrocitys. Though Kane stopped research into Crag when realizing that if we wanted that to happen to me I would have to be altered at a cellular level into the creation that was Crag.
Despite that setback through his lab getting smashed in the mutiny in 10 years Kane has been with us he reported that he was atleast 60% of the way there to getting rid of the negatives to Luciferium. He prioritized getting rid of the blood vessels exploding part as then I could just take it as is to keep me alive in case of fatal injurys. He also said improving something that was stable would be easier then altering something more volatile. He of course tested this on caged animals, and humans occasionally as they brought better test results, but I didn't care I've seen worse in V.O.I.D. research facilities.
