"I didn't expect it to be so easy."
Professor Carney grins from ear to ear as he slowly approaches the girl who is sitting on the ground against the metal lockers.
Nova doesn't understand why her professor attacked her, she had known him for several years and would never have thought that he could do something to her. His whole personality changed, he is shaking his head from side to side the entire time and still has that disgusting smirk on his face.
Professor Carney crouches down to Nova, grabs her by the neck, and stands up together with her. Nova grabs both of his hands and tries to get away from his clutches.
She feels the air escape from her lungs. She kicks and throw her arms around frantically, but it did nothing. He is standing in front of her and it didn't look like Nova's movements were doing anything to him. Nova's eyes were slowly closing and she lost all strength to resist him.
Professor Carney looked pleased when he noticed that her victim had stopped moving.
At that moment, however, he feels a small gust of wind. Something pushes him aside, he hits his head on the corner of the open door of one of the classrooms and it seems that he passed out. Nova gasps and grabs her neck, which is now red from his grip.
When she finally regains her composure she notices a tall girl looking angrily at the professor. Strands of blonde hair were coming out of her pre-styled bun and her eyes are tinted black.
In front of Nova stands Faye, who somehow saved her life again.
"I told you that you can't sympathize with monsters like this," she says with a smirk on her face and heads towards the professor.
Nova coughs a few times and watches as Faye picks him up by the collar of his shirt without saying a word. His eyes are closed, red blood dripping from his right eyebrow.
Faye studies his face and then looks at his neck. She slowly turns her head and opens her mouth. Nova notices two sharp pointed fangs coming out of her front teeth. Faye tilts her head, ready to bite into his neck and end his life.
"Goodbye, you psychotic teacher."
However, she did not succeed. Professor Carney had one last trick up his sleeve. He had no idea it would be so easy to pretend he was unconscious. He opens his eyes and in an instant drives a sharp wooden stake right into Faye's stomach. He had it very well hidden behind his belt and it only took a few seconds of inattention for him to use it.
Faye screams in pain. She drops Professor Carney to the ground and he slowly looks down at her body, which had the one thing that was deadly to a vampire right inside her stomach. Though it was not her heart she could still feel tremendous pain that brought her to her knees.
Her blood begins to appear on her white shirt and slowly runs down her thighs and then onto the shiny floor.
Nova watches as the girl crumples to the ground in pain. She didn't know what to think, she knew that Faye was a vampire. She remembers that her grandmother told her that they had no emotions and only cared about themselves. But then why would Faye save her? Despite it all, Nova looks at Faye with a worried look on her face.
Professor Carney stands up from the ground and glares at the vampire in front of him.
"Did you really think it would be that easy?"
"Go to hell!" Faye yells at him, baring her fangs.
"Stay where you are or another stake will go through your heart. You monster," he says in a deep voice and takes another wooden stake out of his pocket.
He holds it tightly in his right hand and it was clear that he plans to use it soon. He slowly makes his way back to Nova, who is still sitting on the ground, unable to move. She watches as Professor Carney kneels down to her.
"You should never rely on vampires," he says pointing at Faye who is trying to get the stake out of her stomach.
"They feel nothing, no compassion, no sorrow, and are incapable of loving anyone but themselves."
Nova looks out of the corner of her eye at Faye, who is shaking furiously. Professor Carney gently touches Nova's cheek.
"I knew at least one of them would show up if I got too close to you, but I didn't think it would be this fast." he says quietly.
"Don't worry, I'll make sure she suffers until she-"
But he didn't have time to finish his sentence when at that moment everyone hears a big glass door shatter. The professor quickly jumps to his feet and looks around the cold corridor of the school. He can't see anything, all he can hear are the gusts of wind around him.
In a second his head turns to the side and Nova hears a loud crunch. Professor Carney falls to the cold floor with a quick snap of his neck, the dead body falls to the side, his still open eyes filling with emptiness.
Nova looks at him with shock in her eyes and gasps. She can't believe she's looking at another corpse lying right across from her. Shaking all over, she notices another figure now standing over her.
Nova tilts her head to look at the figure and notices a young guy with dark hair looking at her. His coal-black eyes, two fangs that claw at the surface, and the expression of a killer which scared her.
"Kalen?" Nova whispers nervously.
However, he does not answer her. He couldn't, he didn't want Nova to see him like this. He wanted her to see him as a normal guy, but now he is very well aware that he is only lying to himself.
He turns away from her and heads towards his friend, who is holding her stomach with bloodied hands.
"What the hell took you so long?" Faye coughs, looking at him with an annoyed expression.
"This is what I get for trying to be something I'm not!" she adds.
Kalen kneels next to her, grabs the wooden stake in his right hand, and pulls it out. Faye lets out a sigh of relief as she gets to her feet with Kalen's help. It will take some time for her wound to heal again, since it was wood, and even though vampires heal very quickly, this would take a while.
She takes the stake from his hand and throws it far behind her. Faye lowers her head and stares at her bloody T-shirt.
"This shirt was a gift from my friend in New York you bastard," she adds annoyed.
With slow steps, she makes her way to the dead body, which is still lying next to Nova.
She picks it up with both hands, slings it over her shoulder, and heads for the school's now broken doors.
"It would be safer to bring her to our house tonight," adds Faye, who soon turns the corner of the school and disappears.
Nova slowly gets back to her feet and tries to steady her breathing. Her hands are still shaking and her neck is swollen, but she still watches Kalen who is standing a few steps away from her, looking the other way.
She is in shock, yesterday he sat with her on her porch without a single sign of violence and calmly explained everything to her. Today he showed her his dark side which had the same face as Faye. A vampire.
She doesn't know whether to be afraid of him or to try to understand him but she slowly approaches him, she reaches out her right hand, and gently touches his shoulder.
But he flinches and doesn't even look at her. Instead, he heads towards the glass door.
"We're leaving."
Nova just nods and follows him.
Finally, they arrive at the old house where Kalen and Faye now live.
Kalen grabs the handle of the house and opens the door. Nova is standing on the steps right behind him, rubbing her palms together.
On the way here, she let her parents know that she was going to spend the night at her friend's house today, she didn't want them to worry about her unnecessarily.
She was lost in thought for a moment that she didn't even notice Kalen, who was already sitting in one of the armchairs in front of the fireplace. Nova sits next to him and watches him constantly.
She doesn't understand how his so normal-looking face can turn into something so terrifying.
Kalen glances at her out of the corner of his eye. "What?"
"I just…I had no idea you were like her," she says, looking at the warm flames of the fire in the fireplace.
He just laughs. "You mean a monster right?"
However, Nova is quiet.
She doesn't want to admit that she thinks they are both monsters. She doesn't want to think that, she wanted to give them a chance because they certainly wouldn't have saved her just like that, she doesn't even know how they got there. But she can't shake the feeling of insecurity. They were different than her. They weren't human.
"When I saw him leaning over you...Something inside me snapped."
"Kalen, you killed him...I don't know how to deal with it. I understand that he was trying to hurt me, but in two days I saw two dead bodies. No one should have to experience that."
Kalen turns his head to her and says with a guilty tone in his voice. "I can make you forget everything that happened today."
