Chapter 126

Present Day Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei Universe.

After a bit of a detour, Oreki and company arrived in the present timeline without much of a hitch. The passersby on the sidewalk looked at them with curiosity because they didn't see beautiful girls every day in the same place, though they could count at least 3-4 as the other girls could only be considered cute. Compared to the town she oversaw with Sona, it was a huge difference that she didn't want to mention.

Hearing Rias' question, Oreki approached one of the men still staring at Rias and Akeno, who was almost frozen. "Hey, old pervert, do you know Mahesvara?" Oreki asked.

The old man turned to Oreki before defensively saying, "I'm not a pervert, you dumb kid!"

"Come on, old pervert, we've all been there. No, you've always been there. Anyway, answer the damn question," Oreki said.

The old pervert ignored the accusation, saying, "Dumb kid, of course I know Mahesvara. He/she defended Okinawa against the New Soviet Union." He proudly stated some facts, but Oreki ignored him and walked back to his group.

"I think we're in the right timeline," Oreki informed them.

"What now?" asked Sona, whose mouth had been restored after arriving shortly but was still a little pissed about it.

Oreki was about to say something, but someone's stomach started growling. Oreki turned to the yawning Koneko, who did not realize her stomach was grumbling.

"Anyone wants to eat first?" Oreki asked the group.

"Can we? I haven't had breakfast!" Koneko was the one who answered for them.

Oreki nodded and led them to a nearby café. Luckily, the place was quite empty, and the only customer was a woman at the bar counter drinking coffee.

The group ordered swiftly, and while they waited for the food to arrive, Rias asked what they were doing in this world.

"That's the reason," Oreki said, pointing at the TV. The crew of devils looked at the TV and watched intently, curious about what he wanted to do here.

Three people, or anchors, were showing the strengths and weaknesses of the high schools competing in the upcoming Nine School Competition. However, when the anchors started talking about who would be crowned the winner of the competition, they began arguing with each other as if they had a horse in the race.

"The First High is clearly the favorite to win it all, but I have confidence that Third High will manage to clinch an upset against the First High."

"Where did that confidence come from? when the First High has the best and most talented magicians you could ever see?"

"Talented and the best magicians? If you mean the seniors of that school, then yes, they are talented, but what they lack is new blood. The freshmen of the First High this year are lacking. On the other hand, the Third High has the heir to the Ichijou Clan, Ichijou Masaki, enrolled with them. I have high hopes that he will carry the Third High to victory. And there's more! I heard Cardinal George also enrolled in the same school. So yes, that's where my confidence comes from."

"I'll admit that Ichijou and Cardinal George could tip the balance in their favor, but there could be a hidden or untapped talent in the freshmen this year at the First High. So, First High is still going to win it all, period."

After that, they kept debating with each other, and the third anchor didn't even bother before the producer said time was up.

"Alright folks, see you tomorrow as we do the live coverage of the Nine School Competition."

After watching the whole debate, the crew turned silent before Akeno asked, "I thought we were going on vacation?"

"This is our vacation," Oreki replied, putting his arm around Akeno's shoulder."Aw... I thought we would go to a hot spring and have steamy sex there." With that said and done, they talk about how the competition works and decide on what games they will be competing in.

As noon time approached, Oreki stood and gave them money to buy anything they wanted while he was away.

"Where are you going?" Rias asked who already recovered.

"I'm going to talk to our new friend in Second High." Oreki walks to the door of the cafe before teleporting without anyone noticing.

Oreki arrived at the place where Kudou Minoru was staying. He observed Minoru, who was sitting on the bed, looking solemnly through the window of his bedroom.

Oreki then conjured a chair beside the bed and sat on it in reverse before speaking, "Yo…"

Minoru jumped off the bed and faced the smirking Oreki, looking at him vigilantly. Even though his body was weak by this world's magician standards, he was still strong compared to a non-magi.

Kudou Minoru had short, messy dark hair and a serious expression. He was dressed in a loose-fitting, light blue pajama set consisting of a button-up shirt and matching pants. He was barefoot, and his posture was relaxed yet slightly vigilant.

Minoru turned to his CAD on the bedside drawer, wanting to get it to defend himself from the intruder. Why wasn't he screaming for help? He didn't want the intruder to make a rash decision.

Oreki chuckled, making Minoru tense up. "Relax. I'm not here to harm you," Oreki said while putting his hands up. However, Minoru did not let his guard down. He started moving slowly to get his CAD.

"Just stop..." Oreki sighed, thinking he should have knocked before entering the room. "Are you going to use magic? You might exhaust yourself or even collapse just after using one."

Minoru did stop but only after hearing what Oreki said. "You know my illness?" He stared at Oreki intently without blinking. But when he blinked, Oreki was gone from in front of him.

"Here to get this, right?" Minoru turned to his right and saw Oreki handing him the CAD. He slowly picked the CAD from Oreki's hand before wearing it on his wrist. However, he did not use it as he waited for Oreki to speak.

Oreki smiled. "As for your question, yes, I know about your weak body and your wasted potential because of that," he said.

Minoru looked down, thinking about his misfortune of having a genetically flawed body despite all the modifications made to him during his birth. Luckily, his grandfather and his family did not disown him for being "useless," but they were probably disappointed that he would not be able to reach his full potential. Or maybe they just didn't want others to pick up their "trash." As the saying goes, one man's trash is another man's treasure. However, he did know that his family loved him dearly, especially his grandfather and his sister, even with his illness.

"Then why does it matter that you know of it?" Minoru questioned with a frown.

"That's the reason why I'm here," Oreki said, adding confidently that he wanted to cure or fix Minoru's body to be compatible with the modifications made to him.

Minoru was shocked to hear this but then frowned as he doubted Oreki. He asked a hypothetical question, "If you did have the ability to fix my body, what's the catch?"

"I have two reasons," Oreki said, sitting again on the chair he created while leaning back and putting his hands behind his head. "One, I just want to do a good deed."

Minoru did not buy that reason easily but waited for the other reason.

"Two, I don't want your grandfather to make the same mistake he did, and I don't want you," Oreki paused for a bit, "to accidentally kill him," he said with a smirk.

Upon hearing that, Minoru's mind went blank for a minute before he asked, "What the hell are you talking about?"

"Just watch this," Oreki pointed at the TV before saying, "Icarus Elran." Minoru stared at the TV as it started playing something about his grandfather experimenting on other people using some kind of Parasite, which was a dangerous thing to do as those things could endanger humanity. The reason he was doing this was that he wanted to find a way for his grandson, Minoru, to have a strong body and handle magic.

"Grandfather..." Minoru whispered while gritting his teeth as he watched his grandfather go to great lengths to help him find a cure for his body that always overheated every time he used magic. The scene continued with his grandfather in the TV experimenting on the Minoru in the TV. When he was done with the experiment and found out that he was successful in curing his grandson, he was overjoyed. But that joy was short-lived as his grandson accidentally killed him. Minoru then fled the scene, crying and grieving over his grandfather's death.

Minoru, who watched all of this, started crying while looking down at the floor. It took a good five minutes before he started to calm down and look at Oreki. "Did I really kill my grandfather in the future? What you're showing is the future?" he asked.

"Yes, that Minoru from a different timeline did kill your grandfather, but I won't let that happen because I'm here" Oreki said confidently.
