From how quick I found a paper substitute, I didn't have a lot to copy over from wooden scrolls.
I made primitive paint from wild berries to use on my paper.
With paper and writing tools. I could finally start learning in earnest. I delved into the inherited knowledge of the Troll language. Recording everything I knew about it. I even made a few poems and attempted song lyrics. I have no instrument to play along to the words though.
The season changed from a warm season, to Fall, and then Winter felt like it would be arriving soon. The fish trap was catching less and less fish too.
Perhaps it is time to prepare for hunting animals. As I guessed from the trend, the fish will not be enough to feed me when Winter arrives.
As a Troll, I have immense strength. I am confident in killing any animal with my bare hands. However, catching them is the problem. As they will often times be faster than me I imagine. I can't arrows as I would blow apart any animal with an arrow my size. Same thing with slingshots. Which is why I will net traps and the like. Then I'll be able to kill the animals with my hands with an easy snap of the neck.
Nets are good, but I should make some bolas as well.
After a day of net making and bola making, I ventured out of the valley for the first time since I arrived.
Luckily, Trolls have an excellent sense of smell. I can differentiate the animal scents. Although hunting dogs would be much better I think.
As I stalked through the woods that are losing their leaves. I kept my nose up.
I caught a whiff of something and followed. I saw a lone moose. A fine meal for a Troll. I did my best to close in from downwind as quietly as possible. The trees made me slow as my great size restricted me a bit.
I took out a bola I was carried in a slinged sack. I attempt to throw it at the moose. It flies true but does not hit true. One of the rock weights hit the back leg and broke it. The rope part didn't even wrap around any part of the moose. It was not ideal but it worked out.
I walked up to the moose, snapped its neck, picked up my bola and went home with the moose.
I enjoyed having non-fish meat this day. In the following hunts, I got much better with the bola. I had a good system of traps set outside the valley too. Which secures me more animals. I have yet to come across a monster yet.
Time passed like this for many seasons. I learned and recorded a great many things. I found a metal vein that iron-like if not iron. I learned to work it and made iron tools. I got better at making cloths and have plenty of leather to work with. Candles, blankets, books, pottery, and much was learned. I took a great interest in making star maps in the night. As it was interesting to me.
I learned glass making and after much effort I made my first telescope to see the night sky. Which I improved over the years. I made prototype astrolabes for navigation and seasonal time keeping. Which turned into true astrolabes for this new night sky.
In addition, I used a sun dial to use shadows to measure the daylight time of a day. Then I used the movement of the 4 moons to measure the time of night. eventually getting a full grasp of time. Which I expanding to months and years. From then on, I kept time.
I did not simply focus on scholarly activities. I did not neglect my training. As a Troll needs to be able to protect themself. There is magic in my veins that I learned hot to use. I first learned simple manipulation. Then using magic as a physical enhancement. Once I had a decent understanding. I began to try and use it outside my body. Which was difficult.
As while I have great imagination, it took iron will, and focus. It was mentally draining to us outside my body. I spent a great amount of time strengthening my mind to use magic effectively outside my body. I was blissful once I was able to reliably use magic outside my body. Then I focused on elemental magic. As I have great progress on non-elemental magic. Such as a laser, exploding shot, push, grab, and other such magics.
I learned every basic element, Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. I also practiced some non-basic elements. Such as starlight, and nature magic. Nature magic came quite naturally to me. Along with Earth magic.
Using a lot of body mechanic experimentation. I also made a rough martial art for my Troll body. Basic, but I believe it to be reliable.
And so, 150 years passed in solitude.
