Chapter 49

Lydia finished reading and looked up at her hosts. “This seems to be pretty comprehensive.”

“That’s true,” Eric said, “but there are some missing pieces of the puzzle.”

“I can see that,” she said. “You don’t know what happened after Wade and Moses were attacked in the little folly.”

“Exactly,” Carlton said, “and I suspect that’s the key to everything else.”

They discussed the documents in detail, shared a glass of Port, and everyone made an early night of it.

After breakfast the next morning, they didn’t waste any time getting started. Lydia was satisfied with the setup in the little folly, and they decided that Carlton would be her first subject. Eric and Miklos left the two of them on the second floor and headed down the stairs.

“Want to walk around the grounds a bit?” Eric said.

“I’d rather wait here, if you don’t mind,” Miklos said.

“That’s why I have a couple of chairs over in the corner of the room.”
